Steven Rea
Very Good Girls has a breezy yet bittersweet, vaguely nostalgic vibe.
Sheri Linden
Despite a finely wrought lead performance by Dakota Fanning, the drama feels more like the stuff of a mild - and dated - YA novel than an involving exploration of female experience.
Stephen Holden
One insurmountable problem is that the stars, especially Ms. Olsen, 25, are too old for their roles. Another is that the movie has more characters than it can begin to accommodate in 91 minutes.
Elizabeth Weitzman
Disappointingly, Foner's young heroines are defined primarily by their reactions to other people. It's a great credit to Olsen and, especially, Fanning that they manage to make these characters vibrant and sympathetic anyway.
Kyle Smith
A drama that feels like an old person's idea of what young people are like.
Jesse Hassenger
Holbrook acts as a discount Ryan Gosling -- all the mumbling and silence at just 20 percent of the charisma.

Very Good Girls is a film one wants to like but can't. It just doesn't work.
User reviews
I really wanted to give this movie 5 stars because the plot is dramatic and fun but wow. The character David had no personality at all, he was really dull. He was so boring and lifeless that his name and face didn't stick with me. I don't know if its an issue with how the actor portrayed this character or if the writer just made him boring but it was such a downer in the plot. I have no idea why these girls were all over him because his personality resembles a brick wall.

Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker - and in love with her long-term boyfriend and co-worker, Mason (John Gallagher Jr., The Newsroom). But Grace's own difficult past, and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself, throw her into unforeseen confusion.
