Mick LaSalle
A dramatization of what Robinson did and what it required, 42 will not disappoint.
Mary F. Pols
It's not easy to play a stoic, but Boseman anchors the movie, and when he smiles, 42, already such a warm story of such cold times, gets even brighter.
Joshua Rothkopf
The style of the film, lush and traditional, is nothing special, but the takeaway, a daily struggle for dignity, is impossibly moving.
Wesley Morris
So 66 years after Robinson became the first black major league baseball player, here we are with 42, which has been made with such reverence for Robinson's importance that Robinson is barely there.
David Denby
A square, uninventive, but detailed and stirring bio-pic devoted to the two years in an athlete's life that changed a nation.
Richard Roeper
"This is a competent but mostly unexceptional film about a most extraordinary man."

Jackie was an American hero! I'm a huge baseball fan, not only of the game today, but it's history. I believe that Jackie Robinson and Branch Ricky did more for this wonderful sport than anyone ever dior will. What that poor man had to endure during those first three years and really beyond that is truly remarkable. It 66,, goes to show how ignorant a lot of people in this country were, and still are. This is a movie that shouldn't be missed and should be shown in classrooms all across the nation. Jackie is and always will be my hero!

On My Top List of Baseball Movies I frequently get discouraged with the current state of films these days, but this is one GREAT film. Jackie Robinson loved baseball, and decided to not only stand up for himself, but also for baseball. I personally would have never had to suffer like him in this manner because I am a white man. Even if I was a black man, I don't know if I would have had the same courage. It was precisely that courage and perseverance, coupled with his skill, that made him a hero. He continued to show the world what he could do for years and would eventually become a champion. What a great story. You can't write a better one. I'm so proud to call myself a fan of this great game.

WOW! Disappointed I didn't see it sooner! When it first premiered, my sister told me not to waste my time (gave it a HORRIBLE review) on this movie so I skipped it. At the time I hadn't yet discovered the brilliance that is Nicole Beharie; if I had, I would've seen it regardless. Once I did, I knew I had to see "42" for myself and I'm glad I did! Nicole Beharie's performance does not disappoint! The story is VERY well told, cinematography is pretty awesome as well. Harrison's Ford performance is great, as is Boseman' s. Often times the acting carries the project in genres like this, but this really is just an all-around great film. I'd call this a must see. The lifetime softball player in me wishes there were more scenes of Robinson playing :O) but I survived with what I was given. If you haven't seen this, please do. Then catch Nicole Beharie in Sleepy Hollow on Fox! Other great actors in this film: T.R. Knight, James Pickens, Jr., Christopher Meloni--all do an amazing job.
Watched 5000000 times when I grow up I wanna be like Jackie Robinson and inspire people please just so inspiring if I had a time machine to go back in time I would tell the white people it isn't fun to be treated so poorly and back then if white people knew how miserable it is to be treated so badly they would stop being mean black people are the same people as white people just a different colored skin and they brought in America together not just white so yes I do very much respect Jackie Robinson thank you for your help
A Glorified Made for TV Movie I found 42 to be disappointing. Instead of a well-rounded story, with intricate, complex characters, the story was flat and the characters two-dimensional. This would be a fine movie to teach teenagers about integration at the end of the Jim-Crown era, but it's not a great artistic movie.
