There's nothing pretty or exciting about this movie (inexplicably, it's in 3-D), even when all anyone's doing is fighting.
Ben Sachs
The pacing is cloddish and tone unaccountably dour.
Ignatiy Vishnevetsky
A singular viewing experience: a multi-colored downer fantasy which combines bursts of imagination with a bleak worldview, resulting in something that rarely feels mainstream.
Bilge Ebiri
Believe it or not, for all its additions, it's too respectful. You want it to be funnier, crazier.
David Hiltbrand
47 Ronin is admirably devoted to its material, but it's almost tedious to watch.
Alan Scherstuhl
Solemn as a funeral march, humorless as your junior high principal, as Japanese as a grocery-store California roll, Keanu Reeves's let's-mope-about-and-kill-ourselves samurai drama has exactly three things going for it.

An overlong, underwhelming movie now hitting theaters that certainly wasn't worth the wait.

Karen Hefner Usually when Westerners make a movie about Japanese culture made by Americans, they are horrible. 47 Ronin does HONOR to these ancient 47 Samurai. Keanu Reeves, whom I'm not a big fan of, has found his perfect role. With is stoic facial expressions and stiff acting, he IS Kai, the lowly half-breed who is at first despised by all but Lady Asano, and becomes a hero among the 47. The CGI is magnificent, as are the battle scenes, the acting, and the strict adherence to the Laws of Bushido. This has become a new favorite of mine, and I will recommend it to anyone.
Not to bad I think a lot of people came in thinking it would be straight from the history of the 47 ronin. But it's Hollywood with its own effects and twists of the story. Pretty good worth a watch or two. Def better then some of the movies people actually "think" or good and has some amount of plot to it as well
I hated this movies Keanu Reeves is my favorite actor. I thought this movie was going to have more demon fighting but it turn out to be a boring movie. If you like action movies like me don't buy it. This was my worse pick of movies. I need to start reading bad review too because it help to listen to both side..
The Gentlemens Choice A true gentlemen always believes in loyalty above all else. This movie shows us that in spades. One of the best kept secrets in the movie world today. Excellent story, great cinematic journey. One of Mr. Reeves best works. The world would be a better place for me and you, if more people were like the Ronin in this movie. Top shelf. Thanks Kurtis K. Absolutey Epic! What an incredible movie! If you are a fan of the martial arts genre and a fan of Keanu Reeves, you will fall in love with this movie. Crazy effects, great story, just awesome. Oh, and for all you people that are angry that a 'white' guy is the star of the movie, the screen play calls for a half breed; Reeves is quarter chinese, so let that resonate. And Rotten Tomatoes, I will never EVER take advice from your critics ever again, you suck at it so bad, your website should be removed.
Yet another cheesy production from Hollywood A film that thinks it can cover up a giant sinkhole in its screenplay with computer-aided special effects is usually only as good as its computer-aided special effects put together. And lets just say that the CGI in 47 Ronin is as good as somebody throwing Randall from Monsters Inc. into a culture-confused fight scene.
Very worth it I was concerned about the reviews, both when it was in the theater and here on Google Play. I'm very glad I decided to watch it on a rainy Sunday. Good theatrical displays, well choreographed fight scenes not over done. Good love story built in. A few parts could have been done better (like words to describe who someone is, that's lazy movie scripting), but all in all a very worthwhile watch. Keanu fan I am not, but he played this role very well. You can really tell Keanu felt the part.
Best movie I've seen in a while! I love this movie! This is the first review I've written but felt I had to. This movie had me hooked from the first few minutes and didn't disappoint. If you trust "Rotten Tomatoes" I strongly suggest you use your own opinion. Keanu Reeves does an amazing job with his "Half Bread" character, doing justice to his role. I've always liked his style of acting and he put so much of himself into this role really showing just how good an actor he truly is. If you like Keanu then I highly recommend this movie.
MAGNIFICENT!!! Apparently everybody's A CRITIC!! The reviews I have read have deemed this movie as a ridiculous imitation of a classic story, condemning keanu reeves as the bane of this tale in mundane boredom. I believe it is more to the contrary, I feel that his role in the story of a half blooded warrior was well played and that the character was well executed, his portrayal of kai was excellently done. His lack of dialog was what made the plot line more believable, this movie was an emotional rollercoaster and had me captivated from the opening scene!! A MUST WATCH!!!!!!!
OK - It wasn't the matrix To the people that absolutely hated on this movie, I would offer that they didn't have to watch it to hate it...They made up their mind going in. And it's their own fault This movie is kind of like the never ending story meets Black Belt theater. While it is (very) loosely based on (what I understand to be an actual event) ...it featured KEANUE REEVES and monsters....MONSTERS PEOPLE.... THEY DON'T EXIST.... You would have to be crazy to complain about the inaccuracies of events or of a white guy as a major player in a japanese movie - and then turn around and accept that there is some 8 eyed Reindeer thing that people hunted for sport. This isn't meant to educate. It is meant to entertain... and for me...it did. That being said... if there is a more accurate story about 47 Ronin... I would totally see it. Matrix had better fight scenes....The CGI is a little cartoony.... the acting isn't the greatest... but make some popcorn and be glad it isn't twilight!
Meh I've seen good movies (Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, The Artist), I've seen bad movies (Legend of Hercules, the animated Return of the King, Superman Returns), and I've seen okay movies (Hop, Man of Steel, Dark Knight Rises). This movie is just a level below decent, which is meh. I didn't expect much, but I wasn't expecting this exactly. The pacing is so bad it's hilarious. Seriously, there's a scene where a guy gets thrown into a pit, and it literally cuts to one year later when he gets pulled out of the pit. The acting is decent. I like Keanu Reeves more than most people, but even then, I'll admit he's really bland. In this film, meh. This was apparently based on a true story, but I don't remember females turning into dragons in our history books. Now, to be fair, I don't know much about the 47 Ronan, so forgive me if I'm wrong, just seems very odd to me. Thankfully, the film is like a doctor's serum; it hurts, but it's quick, and this film went along pretty quickly. Watch if you've got nothing better to do. 5.5/10
I really liked this movie. I must stop listening to mainstream critics. First Ender's Game, and now this. Mainstream movie critics: you have failed me for the last time. I very much enjoyed watching this. I believe it basically follows the traditional story set in Shogun era Japan. But the movie Itself is a fantasy movie. Don't expect a documentary. I believe it successfully captures a certain "honor is everything" feel. A romantic notion of Bushido code maybe, but a very Japanese theme.
Love it I am Japanese and had watched many 47rounin stuff every new year when I was in Japan and I love this Hollywood version, too. Don't know why many big reviewers hated this movie. Fun, beautiful, satisfying. Though, it is very much like the Lord of the rings and Harry potter meets samurai movie. Actor hiroyuki sanada is amazing as usual.
