Weekend of a Champion

Documentary
On the eve on the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix Roman Polanski joined Scottish Formula 1 champion racer Jackie Stewart for his attempt at a second win of the famed race. Granted unparalleled access to the driver, Polanski follows Stewart through his preparations for one of the most dangerous, albeit the most glamorous, races in the sport.

What follows is a glimpse into the mind of an athlete at the height of his powers competing in a sport where the survival rate, at the time, was one in three. Ever cognizant of the mortal peril he placed himself in; Stewart takes Polanski on a ride around the circuit and explains, in meticulous detail, how he will approach each curve and straightway in order to win and stay in one piece. Throughout the weekend Stewart displays the easy charm that made him such a beloved figure in the racing world along with the great knowledge and focused determination that made him a 3-time champion.

Beyond preparing for the race itself, Polanski joins Stewart and his wife Helen on the glitzy social engagements that make the Monaco GP unique in the racing world. Stars of the day include Princess Grace, Ringo Starr and Joan Collins along with cameos from legendary racers Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, and Graham Hill.

With anticipation building, race day arrives and with it, overcast skies and the constant threat of rain. Despite this, the race goes off smoothly with no major incidents. As Stewart zips around the circuit his wife tensely jots down lap times as the spectators cheer. The race ends with Jackie receiving the winners laurel wreath from Prince Rainer and Princess Grace as champagne flows. The film then pulls out to the two aged masters watching themselves in the same hotel room Jackie stayed in over 40 years earlier. They joke about their former selves and Jackie's sideburns before turning to the more serious discussion of driver safety. Stewart recounts of the utter lack of safety in his era and the dozens of drivers and friends he knew that perished behind the wheel, including his protégé Francois Cevert. Cervert died in what was to be Stewart's final race and he then went on to dedicate his life to safety reform in racing and now it is exceedingly rare for there to be a fatality in a F1 race. The men then take another drive around the Monaco circuit, this time a little slower and with hubris tempered by age as memories jostle with descriptions of what has changed.

Cleanflix

Independent
CLEANFLIX raises provocative questions about artistic vision, consumer rights, film ownership, and self-censorship as it follows the sanitized movie industry from inception to collapse—an industry born from the collision of Kate Winslet's bare breasts in Titanic and the Mormon film goers who didn't want to see them. Because Mormons are counseled by their religion's leaders to avoid R-rated films, dozens of businesses in Utah were able to create a niche in the DVD market by stripping Hollywood films of sex, violence, and profanity and then selling and renting "clean" versions of these films at retail stores not only in Utah, but throughout North America. When news of film sanitizing reached the likes of Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh, Robert Redford, and Martin Scorsese, they and other members of the Director's Guild of America responded with outrage over what they saw as the desecration of their art and a violation of held copyright. In 2006, a US District Court judge ruled in accordance with the DGA's arguments, ordering the retailers of cleaned-up films to close their doors. However, dozens of sanitized-movie retailers defied the judgment and remained open well into 2007 and beyond, supported by their largely Mormon customer base, who saw the Hollywood filmmakers behind the suit as self-important and morally bankrupt. During the time these stores were operating illegally, James and Ligairi had unprecedented access to dozens of renegade stores and their Mormon owners, including the infamous Daniel Thompson. CLEANFLIX follows this publicly open but privately conflicted man through the legal and moral battles he would face, while offering a revealing look behind the scenes of the sanitized movie industry and the Mormon culture that created it.

1 REVOLUTION: The story of Chris Waddell's historic journey to the roof of Africa.

Independent
1 REVOLUTION: The story of Chris Waddell's historic journey to the roof of Africa. This film reveals the heart and spirit behind an extraordinary achievement as it documents the first almost entirely unassisted arm powered ascent of 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Chris Waddell's life changed drastically when he broke his back skiing racing at twenty. A promising ski racer, this divergence in his life path rocketed him to dominance in adaptive ski racing. By the end of his athletic career he was the most decorated male Paralympic skier in history, retiring with 13 medals in summer and winter games and a nod as one of PEOPLE Magazine's fifty most beautiful people. Unsatisfied with retirement, Waddell felt compelled to return to sport and honor the achievements of those who paved the way for his athletic career and give back to those who lives are dampened by seemingly insurmountable challenges.

As a part of the journey an African man named Tajiri joins Chris on the climb. Tajiri lost his leg in a rockslide on Mt Kilimanjaro in 2006 working as a mountain porter and since that traumatic event he has struggled to provide for his family. With the help of a new prosthetic leg he joins Waddell's journey to ascend Kilimanjaro and become the first Tanzania amputee to the summit. Just as Waddell's heroes have influenced him to do the improbable his philanthropy provides the catalyst to change a life in an impoverished and forgotten community.

While the eight days on the mountain were grueling physically and mentally, the achievement illustrates Waddell's vision to demonstrate that what happens to you is not nearly as significant as what you do with what happens to you. 1 REVOLUTION hopes to create social change by highlighting differences in ability, daring, and culture.
