Young Turks

Independent
From 1977 to 1981, multimedia artist Stephen Seemayer took a Super-8mm movie camera and captured some of the artists and denizens of downtown L.A. in their unnatural habitat. He filmed them at work and at play, discussing art and the experience of living amid the gritty alleys and deserted industrial buildings at the city's urban core. A rough cut of the resulting documentary, "Young Turks," was screened at a 1981 event called the Downtown Drive-In. The film was projected onto the wall of a warehouse that had been converted into artist studios. Then it was put into storage and never seen again. Newly digitized and fully reedited with additional footage, "Young Turks" has been re-envisioned by Seemayer, along with film editor Pamela Wilson, with an eye to sharing it with a new generation. In 1981, rents were cheap and life was edgy in downtown L.A. The artists featured in "Young Turks" discussed their reasons for moving there and how it affected their work. Seemayer also turned his camera on those less fortunate who made the streets their home. He managed to capture an intimate snapshot of downtown at a crossroads, before skyscrapers and the Museum of Contemporary Art, when "loft living" was more than just an advertising slogan.

Anton Corbijn Inside Out

Independent
Anton Corbijn is one of the most versatile and authoritative visual artists in popular culture of the past thirty years. He has had a vast influence on what defines fame and artistry in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Initially as a photographer, he played a large role in building the image of artists such as Joy Division, U2 and Depeche Mode. He also contributed to the redefinition of the iconography of artists like The Rolling Stones and Metallica for a new generation.

Inside Out examines Anton's youth and current life and, in doing so, searches for the source and meaning of the themes in his life and work: sacrifice, fame, religion and death. This documentary shows what drives him and what his ideas are on the modern icons that he has created. For the first time Corbijn has granted full access to his life and reveals how he sees himself. He exposes his character and work method through critical and comprehensible interviews with, among others, Bono, Herbert Grönemeyer, Lou Reed and Metallica. The result is an intimate and revealing portrait of a quintessential artist of postmodern pop culture.

Police, Adjective

Independent
"The crime genre seduced me because, every time around, it involves you, the viewer; it's like a puzzle in which you are involved and which provokes you to foresee what is to come...Working on this film, I chose to look, in an almost clinical way, at a police procedural and the way in which cops react; I follow Cristi around the same way he follows his suspects around, with the strong belief that cinema is witness to a meaningless world." - writer-director Corneliu Porumboiu. "Confounds expectations..a subversive intellectual exercise, a philosophical jest." - Kenneth Turan, LA Times. "Exquisitely dry... just about flawless.... ranks right up there with 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS" - Phillips, Chicago Tribune.
