A compelling story of a self-made, self-styled politician, it was politics that almost prevented Rossen from making ALL THE KING'S MEN in the first place when he was named by the House Committee on UnAmerican Activities in 1947 for having Communist sympathies. Rossen's denial of this to Columbia chief Harry Cohn enables him to continue work on the film; but his earlier radicalism eventually surfaced and Rossen made only one film (The Brave Bulls) in the next five years. Nonetheless, ALL THE KING'S MEN remains a hallmark political film with superbperformances throughout. John Ireland garnered an Academy Award(r) nomination for his role as Stark'stortured right-hand man, while Mercedes McCambridge won an Academy Award(r) for Best Supporting Actress as Sadie Burke, Stark's callous, conniving political aide. In addition, the film won an Academy Award(r) for Best Picture along with nominations for Directing, Writing and Film Editing. A Date With Judy

Comedy
The great American tragedy is no date on Satgedy, but perky Judy Foster (Jane Powell) needn't worry. Her date for the school dance is that oh-so-handsome new guy in town (Robert Stack). What's more, she saw him first, so finders keepers, right? Not if her best friend Carol Pringle (Elizabeth Taylor) has her way! Powell and Taylor both moved into more mature roles with this sunny musical inspired by the popular radio series launched in 1941. "One minute I was kissing a horse and the next I was kissing Bob Stack. And I loved it," Taylor said about this new step in her career. Also taking steps is Wallace Beery, mentored in the rumba (to Xavier Cugat's orchestra) by inimitable Carmen Miranda. A little wiggle here, a little there -- now you got it. See you Satgedy!

Highlights of this fourth Thin Man include a visit to the arena for the evening's wrasslin' and dinner at Mario's Grotto where, no matter what anyone wants, the waiter insists upon the sea bass. As in all films in the series, the supporting cast is extraordinary, with Sam Levene, Barry Nelson, Donna Reed, Henry O'Neill and Stella Adler among Shadow's heroes and possible villains. Red herrings abound. But we still recommend the sea bass.

Along the way he befriends a beautiful but cynical stray (Veronica Lake), and learns about the cruelty of life among the less fortunate. In the midst of the brutality and despair, the young director makes a valuable discovery that what the downtrodden need most is laughter. Hailed by critics as Preston Sturges' masterpiece, Sullivan's Travels reveals the wonderful insight and artistry of one of Hollywood's finest directors.

Andy Hardy's Private Secretary

Classics
Andy's gone and done it this time. All set to graduate from high school and he flunks his English exam -- in spite of the fact that Aunt Milly is his teacher, and that the Judge has gone to all the trouble of getting him his very own private secretary (Kathryn Grayson in her screen debut). What makes this Andy Hardy movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter, "even better than the wildly cheered Love Finds Andy Hardy?" It could be Mickey Rooney's irresistible charm. Or could it be the perfected plot of Andy juggling his steady love (Polly Benedict) with his growing affections for another girl? Or perhaps it's the nonstop laughs Rooney generates with such antics as trying to buy ladies' hose or letting the Judge take a spin in his jalopy in the pouring rain. Whatever the case, here's your chance to return to a simpler and happier time with the family America loved to love.

Maisie Was a Lady

Comedy
Look who's rubbing elbows with the New York upper crust. It's sometime showgirl and carny sideshow attraction Maisie Ravier (Ann Sothern, playing the brassy screen heroine for the fourth time), earning her daily bread as a maid at the posh Rawlston estate on Long Island. There, she finds that the Rawlston patriarch is a neglectful and absentee parent, the fragile daughter (Maureen O'Sullivan) is engaged to a fortune hunter, and the son (Lew Ayres) is an indulgent layabout (but he is kind of handsome). Maisie may be out of her milieu at the Rawlston manor, but she is in her element when it comes to confronting the shams, pretensions and wrongs she finds there. C. Aubrey Smith joins the fun as the ever-dutiful Rawlston butler. Later during the same year of Maisie Was a Lady's release, Sothern, O'Sullivan and Ayres reunited for a radio version.

Acting on a hunch, Andy decides to investigate any local girls who have the middle initial "V". Narrowing the field to three, Andy finds himself juggling romances while trying to stay true to real gal pal Polly Benedict (Ann Rutherford). But things take a sudden serious turn for the worse when Andy's beloved mother (Fay Holden) falls seriously ill. Studio chief Louis Mayer had a personal interest in the Andy Hardy series, crafting the town of Carvel into his own ideal of Americana. Andy's deeply moving heartfelt prayer for the health of his mother has been attributed to Mr. Mayer, himself!

Jesse James

Classics
The real Frank and Jesse James were murderous thugs, light years away from the Robin Hood image imposed on them by revisionist dime novelists. But in 1939, 20th Century-Fox wasn't about to build an expensive Technicolor feature around the exploits of a couple of low-lives, thus Jesse James upholds the mythos, offering us the standard whitewashed version of the James boys. According to Nunally Johnson's irresistibly entertaining screenplay, Jesse (Tyrone Power) and Frank (Henry Fonda) become train and bank robbers to avenge the death of their mother (Jane Darwell), killed at the behest of greedy railroad interests. Once he feels his work is done, Jesse settles down to a life of marital domesticity--only to be shot in the back by cowardly Bob Ford (John Carradine). Frank James is left alive at film's end, paving the way for the 1941 sequel The Return of Frank James. Director Henry King stages the action sequences in glorious outsized fashion, notably the famous bank-robbery scene in which Jesse rides his horse through a plate glass window. The scenes involving both James brothers are stolen hands-down by Henry Fonda, not so much because he was a better actor than Tyrone Power but because his character had all the best lines. Jesse James was filmed largely on location in Missouri, resulting in crowd-control nightmares for the picture's beleaguered assistant directors.

San Quentin

Drama
Do the crime, do the time. But what happens during the long years spent behind the walls of San Quentin? The penitentiary's new yard captain wants to make those years a time of rehabilitation rather than punishment. But not everyone's buying it. "He's just another copper to me," snarls inmate Red Kennedy. Humphrey Bogart portrays Red, continuing his climb to stardom in this brisk film that's one of a string of Depression-era works combining gangster-movie elements with a Big House setting. Studio mainstay Pat O'Brien plays Steve Jameson, whose carrot-and-stick reforms begin to change Red's thinking. An inmates' strike and a scripture-quoting con who swipes a rifle are among the troubles Jameson faces. And Red is another as he reverts to his old ways and makes a violent break for freedom.

Slim

Classics
"I never wanted to do nothin' as bad as I want to be a lineman!" To farm boy Slim Kincaid (Henry Fonda), daring death in the electric high wires looks like mighty heroic work. So he shakes the sod off his boots and joins a crew, where a tough lineman (Pat O'Brien) befriends the newcomer -- including introducing him to his best girl (Margaret Lindsay). There's trouble ahead, on the job and in the heart, in this brawny, rough-and-tumble drama adapted from a popular book by William Wister Haines (Black Legion, Command Decision). The scenario lets Fonda do what he does best: manifest the strength and dignity of the common man. The denouement is sensational, with the two men climbing towers in a blinding blizzard to repair lines "as hot as an electric chair," knowing the slightest misstep means disaster.

Pick a Star

Classics
Jack Haley (the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz) stars in this smorgasbord of entertainment, highlighted by hilarious vignettes from those masters of slapstick, Laurel & Hardy. Meanwhile, Cecilia serendipitously meets womanizing movie star Rinaldo Lopez (Mischa Auer), and, along with her wisecracking sister Nellie (Patsy Kelly), they luck into a free trip to Tinseltown. Led to the studio by Lopez, Cecilia is smitten with the showbiz bug as she experiences a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of a big musical number, a classic barroom brawl sequence and Laurel & Hardy in their finest comedic form. A delightful gem, Pick a Star has it all: singing, dancing, comedy and romance.

Camille

Drama
Life in 1847 Paris is as spirited as champagne and as unforgiving as the gray morning after. In gambling dens and lavish soirees, men of means exert their wills and women turned courtesans exult in pleasure. One such woman is Marguerite Gautier (Greta Garbo), the Camille of this sumptuous romance tale based on the enduring Alexandre Dumas story. Garbo's aloof mystique and alabaster beauty illuminate this George Cukor-directed film featuring what many call her finest performance. Her Camille is a movie paragon of true love found (in suitor Armand Duval, memorably played by Robert Taylor), then sacrificed for a greater good. Garbo earned an Academy Award nomination and the New York Film Critics Best Actress Award for her memorable work.

My Man Godfrey

Drama
A landmark screwball comedy from Hollywood's golden age, My Man Godfrey follows the madcap antics of a ditzy debutante (Carole Lombard) who stumbles upon a "forgotten man" (William Powell) at the city dump. As the family's antics grow increasingly more absurd, it is only a matter of time before Godfrey's secret past is revealed.
