Paul Bowles- The Cage Door is Always Open

Documentary

Soon, Paul's friends and peers from America began visiting - Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Gore Vidal, Jack Kerouac, Alan Ginsberg, William Burroughs and many others. The Neo-Lost Generation, the Beats, the Hippies all searched him out, lured by the mysterious and magical world he depicted in his books. But that was only one side of the story. Though Bowles never hid his homosexuality, he was married to the lesbian writer Jane Bowles. What attracted them despite their extremely different personalities was a shared worldview - that one must travel to the point of no return in order to find salvation. Based on an exclusive series of interviews with Bowles shortly before his death and anecdotes provided by his friends and collaborators, "Paul Bowles - The Cage Door is Always Open" tells of a daring and visionary life and a relationship shaped by a co-dependency that went way beyond sexuality. Suitcase of Love and Shame

Documentary
A forbidden love story played out in a decade that would soon spawn the sexual revolution, Suitcase of Love and Shame reconstructs a mesmerizing and erotic narrative from 60 hours of reel-to-reel audiotape discovered in a suitcase purchased on eBay. In 1964, the couple, Tom and Jeannie, lived in different cities. Long distance phone calls were risky (Tom was married) and cost prohibitive, so instead they recorded audio letters to one another and sent them discreetly in the mail. The recordings were raw, intimate, and candid; innermost thoughts and desires, sexual indiscretions, juxtaposed with observations on the banality of their work and daily lives. They recorded everything. When they would meet in hotel rooms on business trips, they recorded themselves making love. The tapes memorialized their affair. They also captured all that was happening around them, the rich textural sounds of life in the Midwest in the 1960s: thunderstorms, telephones ringing, barking dogs, intercoms, even Bert Parks announcing the winner of the Miss America Pageant of 1965. In today's social media environment, where recording and sharing one?s most personal and private moments is commonplace, it is striking to confront such a salacious and candid media example from a half a century ago. In the early 1960's, most people were not thinking about the impact and dissemination of recorded media, yet Tom and Jeannie documented their lives for the same reasons we do today. Quite unlike any other documentary, SUITCASE OF LOVE AND SHAME opens a remarkably rich dialogue about confession, exhibitionism, privacy and voyeurism.

Weekend of a Champion

Documentary
On the eve on the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix Roman Polanski joined Scottish Formula 1 champion racer Jackie Stewart for his attempt at a second win of the famed race. Granted unparalleled access to the driver, Polanski follows Stewart through his preparations for one of the most dangerous, albeit the most glamorous, races in the sport.

What follows is a glimpse into the mind of an athlete at the height of his powers competing in a sport where the survival rate, at the time, was one in three. Ever cognizant of the mortal peril he placed himself in; Stewart takes Polanski on a ride around the circuit and explains, in meticulous detail, how he will approach each curve and straightway in order to win and stay in one piece. Throughout the weekend Stewart displays the easy charm that made him such a beloved figure in the racing world along with the great knowledge and focused determination that made him a 3-time champion.

Beyond preparing for the race itself, Polanski joins Stewart and his wife Helen on the glitzy social engagements that make the Monaco GP unique in the racing world. Stars of the day include Princess Grace, Ringo Starr and Joan Collins along with cameos from legendary racers Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, and Graham Hill.

With anticipation building, race day arrives and with it, overcast skies and the constant threat of rain. Despite this, the race goes off smoothly with no major incidents. As Stewart zips around the circuit his wife tensely jots down lap times as the spectators cheer. The race ends with Jackie receiving the winners laurel wreath from Prince Rainer and Princess Grace as champagne flows. The film then pulls out to the two aged masters watching themselves in the same hotel room Jackie stayed in over 40 years earlier. They joke about their former selves and Jackie's sideburns before turning to the more serious discussion of driver safety. Stewart recounts of the utter lack of safety in his era and the dozens of drivers and friends he knew that perished behind the wheel, including his protégé Francois Cevert. Cervert died in what was to be Stewart's final race and he then went on to dedicate his life to safety reform in racing and now it is exceedingly rare for there to be a fatality in a F1 race. The men then take another drive around the Monaco circuit, this time a little slower and with hubris tempered by age as memories jostle with descriptions of what has changed.

Check Your Body at the Door

Check Your Body at the Door is a film about remarkable underground House dancers and dancing in NYC's golden decade, the 1990s. Featuring interviews and rare dance footage with legendary House dancers, it follows a group of master free-stylists to the clubs, at their jobs and in their everyday lives. Filmed on location and in a studio against a white background, in silhouette or in light pools, the one-hour documentary reveals the virtuosity of this eclectic urban dance style. Today, House is an international music/dance craze practiced worldwide. An historical record, Check Your Body at the Door contextualizes a wide variety of House dance forms and answers: What did House dancing look like? Who were the dancers? Why did they dance? Executive Producer Sally R. Sommer says the Check Your Body at the Door project began "because nobody was paying serious attention to the dancers. The club footage that existed showed hundreds of torsos bouncing to loud music under multicolored lights." But as a dance journalist and social-dance historian, Sommer saw something different at David Mancuso's "Loft" in 1982, where she first went with dancer Archie Burnett: "I saw amazing artists and dancing in the dark. I longed for a dance film that showed the entire body and placed dancers at the heart of the matter."

The rise of the United Auto Workers union and their hard-fought contract settlements result in unprecedented quality-of-life gains, provide a voice on the job, and contribute to lifting millions of workers to a middle-class living. As UAW President for nearly 3 decades, Walter is a skilled negotiator and orator, with his brothers as advisors on community, legislative, and international affairs. The Kennedy and Johnson administrations frequently seek their counsel and the union's resources support Dr. King and the burgeoning civil rights movement. On the opposite side of this impassioned battle, a devious web of adversaries -- corrupt company officials, organized crime, and conservative lawmakers -- are threatened by the ambitious Reuther brothers and determined to silence them. Assassination attempts shake the family to its core. With increasing power and influence on the national stage, the incendiary trio face heart-wrenching consequences at the crossroads of their political loyalty and militant rank-and-file roots. Narrated by Martin Sheen, Brothers On The Line is a stirring personal story of sacrifice, triumph, and tragedy. Mama C: Urban Warrior in the Black Bush

Documentary
"In my freshly landed, just got off the boat enthusiasm for living in Africa, I tried to blend, to melt, homogenize, disappear, erase the essence of what made me who I was and am, an African, who grew up in, and was moulded by, the hoods of America. I almost lost myself self", Charlotte O'Neal, aka Mama C, booms out in her rich, velvet voice. This poeticism is imbued in every aspect of her life, as she manages to tackle her African-American identity and exile with rare eloquence and insight.
As a teenager living in the tinder box that was Kansas during the Civil Rights Movement, she ran away from home and joined the Panthers. But shortly afterwards, as the city exploded in violence, she and her new husband had to leave. As he explains, "They had police stationed outside our houses, we were under constant surveillance and I said to Charlotte, we won't live much longer." Now living in Tanzania they run a home for extremely disadvantaged children and Mama C continues to make her art and explore her complex relationship with Africa and her homeland. "I had brothers and sisters come from the states that tell me Mama C, you're free to do that because you're not under this constant pressure of racism that we are living in the west." She explains how the feeling in Africa is so different to the world she grew up in, "there wasn't a shield up that you had to constantly have wrapped around you when you're in the west". She speaks of how the perspective of exile has completely changed her life and outlook, "You know being here, living here in Africa but also looking at myself as a part of the international community, as a part of the global family, has really freed my spirit".
A true revolutionary and trailblazer, her words speak to a remarkable universal vision of what society should be: "Tribalism, no! Tribal wisdom is what we want. Peace, love and unity."

For Liberty: How the Ron Paul Revolution Watered the Tree of Liberty

Documentary
As the presidential primary season kicks off in early 2007, the Republican Party has become a stench to the American people. The Bush Administration has overseen the initiation of two wars, an unprecedented debt expansion, bailouts, a frightening disregard for Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and a "war on terror" that more closely resembled a war on privacy and civil liberties. President Bush prepared to step down, leaving "Republican" a dirty word on the lips of many.  For Liberty: How the Ron Paul Revolution Watered the Withered Tree of Liberty follows the most successful grassroots presidential campaign in United States history, analyzing this unprecedented political upheaval from the perspective of those who were there making it happen. Filmmakers Chris Rye & Corey Kealiher take a look into the genesis of a movement the likes of which have been unseen since the countercultural movements of the 1960's.

Harvest

Documentary
Shot entirely in Sonoma County, the feature-length documentary "Harvest" reveals the blood, sweat and tears that go into every bottle of wine. There is no swirling, no sniffing, no sipping or quaffing. This is all about back-breaking manual labor and night picks at 2 a.m. with only tiny headlamps. Over the course of three months during Harvest 2011, the film follows five family wineries Robledo, Rafanelli, Foppiano, Harvest Moon and Robert Hunter, along with an amateur home winemaker and an extremely rare all-female picking crew made up of women from Michoacan and Oaxaca, Mexico. Not interested in massive corporate wineries, director John Beck instead casts his intimate DSLR lens on salt-of-the-earth, tight-knit family farmers and field workers who are the backbone of the wine industry, revealing a glimpse of the American grape harvest that has never before been captured on film. Along the way, we meet Reynaldo Robledo, the first migrant worker to own his own winery. There's Wayne Rogers, who loses 80 percent of his zinfandel crop to wild pigs. In his early 70s, Rudy Rodriquez has devoted more than half his life to Robert Hunter Winery. The women pickers share their border-crossing stories, showing how much they sacrificed just to get to Sonoma County, much less do a job that most Americans would never consider. The narrative builds to a third act of untimely rainstorms and widespread grape rot - what everyone in the film will later agree is the worst harvest in their lifetimes. This is the story behind the wine you drink.

Dancing the Big Apple 1937

Documentary
DANCING THE BIG APPLE, 1937:  African-Americans Inspire a National Craze is an innovative documentary exploring The Big Apple dance in the context of American history. A closer look at the roots of the Big Apple takes us on a journey back to Africa, through slavery, and into the fascinating account of the Ring Shout ceremony practiced by the African-Americans for several centuries. Fast forwarding to 1937, we see the nation struggling to recover from the Great Depression. The Big Apple dance provided helpful medicine in hard times. Americans from every walk of life let loose in this infectious circle dance. Cued by a caller, dancers did moves from the Lindy Hop, Shag and Charleston, and popular jazz steps like Trucking and Pecking. Individual dancers or couples were invited to "Shine" in the center of the circle. From a multi-cultural collision of influences, it was only a matter of months before Americans from coast to coast and from every walk of life, including FDR’s family in the White House, were doing the Big Apple dance. As the final badge of popularity, The Big Apple was featured in Life Magazine in 1937. It was a unifying experience that provided healing and joy at a time when there was little to be happy about. In this intriguing documentary, rare archival dance film footage illustrates the ingredients of the Big Apple, demonstrating many of the steps. Historic documentation uncovers its deep roots in the African-American community.

The Rescuers

Documentary
While Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List illuminated the previously little-known story of a German businessman who saved hundreds of Jews from the concentration camps during WWII, there were many such heroes who defied the Nazis to save countless Jews from a similar fate---chief among them the 12 diplomats whose efforts are documented in this riveting documentary from Emmy-winning filmmaker Michael King and Producer Joyce D. Mandell.
The film traces the journey of Stephanie Nyombayire, a young Rwandan anti-genocide activist who teams up with Sir Martin Gilbert, the renowned Holocaust historian, to travel across 15 countries and three continents interviewing survivors and descendants of the diplomats who rescued tens of thousands of Jews from the unspeakable horrors of the Nazi death camps. While Nyombayire embarks upon this quest in an effort to uncover potential solutions for the ongoing genocide in Darfur and elsewhere, what emerges from their journey is a testament to the ways in which the inherent good in the human spirit can trump institutional evil.

Disco and Atomic War

Documentary
Winner of the Best Documentary prize at the Warsaw International Film Festival, this witty, charming, and provocative film recounts how in the mid 1980's, the nation of Estonia still lay firmly in the grip of the Soviet Union, and the repressive authorities controlled virtually all aspects of Estonian life. The totalitarian government's power was derived in no small part from their ability to censor cultural life and keep Western culture on the other side of the border. Rock and Roll was but a rumor and the only television shows on the air were dreary propaganda. But one day everything changed. Just a few miles across the border in Finland, a huge new television antenna was built that broadcast western signals in all directions--including directly into the heart of the Talinn, the capital of Estonia. Filmmakers Jaak Kilmi and Kiur Aarma grew up in Talinn in the 80's, and in Disco and Atomic War they make use of wonderfully playful but credible recreations to set their true personal coming of age story against the backdrop of the rapid collapse of the Soviet government in Estonia. As illicit television antennas sprung up in Northern Estonia, rumors about the attempted murder of J.R. Ewing spread by word of mouth to the rural south, and the nation of Estonia was as gripped by the saga as the USA had ever been. Teenagers went to their school dances and imitated the disco moves they saw on television, clothing and hairstyles began to change radically, and things would never be the same. The government controlled media scrambled to create western-style soap operas and disco-saturated television programming that vaguely reinforced communist values, but it was far too little, and much too late. The genie was out of the bottle, Estonians were now in the grip of American television, and they began to dream that one day, they too would spend their days working in skyscrapers and their nights drinking fine whiskey by the pool, alongside their robot cars.

Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law

Documentary
"I have been beaten up from time to time and harassed but that's part of the terrain." It's shocking to hear this kind of coolness from Beatrice against the images of her covered in bruises and welts from a police beating. However, her bravery does not go unnoticed. She is one of only two Africans to have won the Ludovic-Trarieux International Human Rights Prize, the other being Nelson Mandela. Having suffered great economic and social privations under Mugabe, Beatrice hopes for a better future for Zimbabwe. "All of us want a basic education for our children, we want basic health facilities for our children, we want basic amenities in our home for our children", she says. Her belief is that through trying to uphold the rule of law she can achieve these desires. So she takes on all cases where she feels the rule of law has been violated. From Jestina Mukoko, director of the Zimbabwe Peace Project who was detained for 89 days, for investigating human rights abuses, "I thought I had moved out of my body and I was watching this suffering woman from somewhere else. That's what the pain did to me". To Roy Bennett, an exiled political activist and White farmer. "If it wasn't for Beatrice, I'm sure they would have killed me in that prison." The Mugabe regime is aware of her fight and seeks to slander her at every turn. "I can tell you Beatrice Mtetwa is not a stickler for the law, she uses the law to push her political agenda." Jonathan Moyo from the Zanu PF party tells us. In fact the vitriol is so intense that after clearing Beatrice's client, foreign journalist Andrew Meldrum, the judge launched an extraordinary personal attack on her: "He read his verdict which was an hour long. It was 59 minutes of guilty... and half of the verdict was a character assassination of Beatrice." Here is an inspiring story that breeds hope for Zimbabwe and yet Beatrice remains inspiringly modest: "This has to be done. Somebody's got to do it, and why shouldn't it be you?"
