Documentary
A son's riveting look at a father whose life seemed straight out of a spy thriller, The Man Nobody Knew - In Search Of My Father, CIA Spymaster William Colby uncovers the secret world of a legendary CIA spymaster. Told by William Colby's son Carl, the story is at once a probing history of the CIA, a personal memoir of a family living in clandestine shadows, and an inquiry into the hard costs of a nation's most cloaked actions. From the beginning of his career as an OSS officer parachuting into Nazi-occupied Europe, William Colby rose through the ranks of "The Company," and soon was involved in covert operations in hot spots around the globe. He swayed elections against the Communists in Italy, oversaw the coup against President Diem in Saigon, and ran the controversial Phoenix Program in Vietnam, which sparked today's legacy of counter-insurgency. But after decades of obediently taking on the White House's toughest and dirtiest assignments, and rising to become Director of CIA, Colby defied the President. Braving intense controversy, he opened up to Congress some of the agency's darkest, most tightly held secrets and extra-legal operations. Now, his son asks a series of powerful and relevant questions about the father who was a ghost-like presence in the family home - and the intelligence officer who became a major force in American history, paving the way for today's provocative questions about security and secrecy vs. liberty and morality. The film forges a fascinating mix of rare archival footage, never-before-seen photos, and interviews with the "who's who" of American intelligence, including former National Security Advisers Brent Scowcroft and Zbigniew Brzezinski, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, former Secretary of Defense and Director of CIA James Schlesinger, as well Pulitzer Prize journalist Bob Woodward. 230. Concrete

Documentary
The Israeli Defence Force operation "Cast Lead" in Gaza wasn't covered by the media due to military embargo. For the first time, Israeli soldiers who took part in the conflict in 2009 speak out about their actions. This intimate doc forges an arresting narrative of an unknown war. In a city built as a model of Gaza, a confused young IDF soldier shows his mother the tanks and other weapons of war he'll soon be operating. "My mom came with sunglasses and a purse, like she was on an outing", says the soldier of the days before entering the real Gaza. They were brought "boxes of food and candy and treats" by their proud families, who celebrated their impending fight against Hamas terrorists as if it was Independence Day. Even a day before entering Gaza, the mood recounted by the men sounds infectious as reality and fiction blur. "At night there were these beautiful bombs, green and red. Like pyrotechnic displays", says a wide eyed young man. Looking back on the first day, a more sceptical member of the battalion expresses disbelief: "We went into the big mess and fired like crazy, no one knew what he was shooting at."
Candid interviews reveal how these naive troops found themselves in a ghost town, populated by abandoned animals and ruined homes. Repeatedly comparing their experiences to high-budget Hollywood war films by the likes of Steven Spielberg, the one thing missing was a clear enemy: "The firing orders were a disgrace, nobody said anything about civilians. They said: When in doubt, shoot, just don't let them kill our men." Yet even with no obvious targets, many found themselves exhilarated by the paranoia and danger, leading to the indiscriminate shelling of civilian buildings: "It sounds really terrible to say 'cleanse' but those were the orders." asserts one man.

Girls who survive infancy are often subject to neglect, and many grow up to face extreme violence and even death at the hands of their own husbands or other family members. The war against girls is rooted in centuries-old tradition and sustained by deeply ingrained cultural dynamics which, in combination with government policies, accelerate the elimination of girls. Shot on location in India and China, It's a Girl reveals the issue. It asks why this is happening, and why so little is being done to save girls and women. The film tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls, of women who suffer extreme dowry-related violence, of brave mothers fighting to save their daughters' lives, and of other mothers who would kill for a son. Appreciated by both the art cognoscenti and the public, Basquiat was launched into international stardom. However, soon his cult status began to override the art that had made him famous in the first place. Director Tamra Davis pays homage to her friend in this definitive documentary, but also delves into Basquiat as an iconoclast. His dense, bebop-influenced neoexpressionist work emerged while minimalist, conceptual art was the fad; as a successful black artist, he was constantly confronted by racism and misconceptions. Much can be gleaned from insider interviews and archival footage, but it is Basquiat's own words and work that powerfully convey the mystique and allure of both the artist and the man.

Documentary
Sgt. Adam Burke made a promise to God. Bleeding out from a mortar hit in Iraq, Adam promised God that if he could live to see his family again, he would do something to make his life worth saving. Two years later he started the Veterans Farm, a place of emotional solace and job training in organic blueberry production for disabled vets like himself. 'Teach these guys how to farm, they can have sustainable lives with sustainable agriculture.'

Our warriors are coming home from battle and sharing their stories. “Ground Operations: Battlefields to Farmfields” traces their journey into the war, through the gauntlet and back home, where they experience unemployment, PTSD, drug and alcohol addiction. Faced with the absence of their team and a mission, wounded and forgotten, a veteran commits suicide every 80 minutes.

The vets in Ground Operations are bucking those odds. “As a combat veteran, I was involved in a lot of destruction. “ says Mike, a former Marine. “Shifting from that to growing something, seeing something thrive, does something on a very deep spiritual level.” Working from disability checks, often pulling their buddies along with them, we witness Ground Operations’ heroes restoring their lives and serving their communities with new careers in sustainable farming and ranching.

Lucky for us, because “there are twice as many farmers over the age of 65 as under the age of 35., reports Michael, director of the Farmer-Veteran Coalition. “ We see the loss of our farmers as a matter of national security.” The USDA is calling for a million new farmers in the next ten years to fill the coming gap.

Fortunately, the Cavalry coming over the hill is just that ... it's the Marines, Army, Air Force and National Guard. Recognizing the connection between local food security and national security,
these young men and women are forging a network in sustainable agriculture that benefits us all.

Central Casting couldn't have done a better job. The vets in 'Ground Operations' are compelling, funny, handsome, entrepreneurial and engaging, and you'll be rooting for them all the way to your local farmers market. America needs a million new farmers. Veterans want the job!

288. Titanic Arrogance

Documentary
So how did a ship that was apparently built to be impregnable sink on its maiden voyage? The genuine account of the Titanic's sinking is a catalogue of errors, ineptitude and negligence.

In truth the Titanic was designed more for comfort than safety. The 16 watertight compartments that comprised the hulls were not extended very far upwards, "so as not to interfere with the spacious passenger areas". This compromise made the ship vulnerable from the outset. Worse still was the dark secret the Titanic was hiding behind its pristine hulls. Some of its coal had caught fire when it sailed for Southampton and remained alight for the entire journey. Luckily the fire did not spread but "had the trade surveyor known, the ship never would have had clearance to sail".

Even worse still, when the Titanic set sail it was not equipped with enough lifeboats. In the years preceding the launch the safety regulations for cruise liners did not categorize ships by passenger numbers but by weight. Not only this, they also foresaw the maximum weight category as 10,000 tons, while the Titanic was 46,000 tons. As a result regulations did not require any rationalization of lifeboats and passenger numbers. It almost seems too stupid to believe but it's the truth.

Yet even these disastrous oversights could have gone unnoticed if it wasn't for captain EJ Smith, a man picked for his social rather than sailing skills. His career had been defined by a series of close calls, "Over the years he'd been involved in a number of scrapes, groundings and near misses...".

But is that an accurate portrayal of the facts? An eye-opening documentary with jaw-dropping revelations, Hot Coffee exposes how corporations spend millions on propaganda campaigns to distort Americans' view of lawsuits-forever changing the civil justice system. By examining the impact of tort reform on the lives of ordinary citizens, the film shows how Americans give up their Constitutional rights in all sorts of ways without knowing it-for example, by voting for caps on damages or signing away your rights in contracts. Through interviews with politicians, judges, lawyers and ordinary citizens, first-time filmmaker and former public-interest lawyer Susan Saladoff delves into the facts of four cases to tear apart the conventional wisdom about 'jackpot justice."

290. 40 Days at Base Camp

Documentary
"I don't know anything about mountaineering!" laughs first-time climber Bagyashree, as her expedition leader shows her how to use an oxygen mask. Like a beehive with no queen, Everest Base Camp has become a sprawling, haphazard community of individuals, all competing for space to make their own push to the summit. "Boy has it changed. There used to be only one expedition per season, now there's dozens...and hundreds of climbers", reflects Dr Peter Hackett, a leading figure in high-altitude medicine and Everest veteran.

Despite the inherent dangers of the mountain, commercial expeditions come here every year, with customers paying up to $100,000 for the privilege. Over 3,000 people have summated Everest 1953. Yet 250 people have also died on the mountain. Between the tents in Base Camp, gruesome body parts surface through the ice in various stages of decomposition. "The death rate has been remarkably stable. It's still higher than most people would accept for a holiday..."Hackett says with a wry smile.

It's an eclectic bunch taking the risk, from 16-year-old Arjun wanting to be the youngest Indian to summit Everest, to Nelson, who wants to be the first Colombian with a prosthetic leg to reach the top. But for every noble story of personal achievement, there are warnings to be heeded. "Climate change is a real issue. The mountain is melting and becoming more and more dangerous". Unofficial clean-up operations desperately attempt to clamp down on the piles of tin cans, bottles, ropes, gas canisters, tent poles and discarded clothing that blot an otherwise majestic landscape. "We're so sad, because this is our God", sighs Chuna, a local Nepali expedition guide.

And despite the changes, the mountain remains a force to be reckoned with. As the season draws to a close, its latest visitors have certainly been shown who's boss. "You can commercialize the crap out of it, but the mountain doesn't care who you are...you got to be humble in the mountains."
