Let us pray for the whole world, that there might be a great sense of brotherhood. And now I would give the blessing, but first I want to ask you a favor.
Before the Bishop blesses the people, I ask that you pray for the Lord to bless me.
The prayer of the people for their Bishop. Let us say this prayer - your prayer for me - in silence". This documentary of a legend was co-directed by Robbie Cavolina and Ian McCrudden who produced with Melissa Davis. Anita O'Day only ever wanted to be a singer and the film showcases performances that date back to the 50s with such artists as Gene Krupa, Roy Eldridge, Stan Kenton, Louis Armstrong and Hoagy Carmichael. She is shown teaching Billy Taylor how to be a jazz vocalist. She speaks candidly, always candidly, with Dick Cavett, Bryant Gumble and David Frost, with clips from interviews done on 60 Minutes and CBS This Morning. Bert Stern, commenting on his experience filming Anita perform Sweet Georgia Brown for his film Jazz on a Summer's Day, said it was the greatest rendition of the song ever made. Anita was a musical genius and pioneer who broke reverse race barriers. She was commonly regarded as one of the top female artists of her time, together with Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday. The film portrays her as a woman who lived her life the way she wanted without ever looking back. She speaks openly about how she had to overcome great adversities, including a 20-year addiction to heroin and alcohol. She chose never to have children and married for only a brief period. She lived an often lonely life that was sustained only by her passion for music. Personalities talk about her quirky personality, while jazz critics and her few still living contemporaries speak of her extraordinary talent and how amazing it is that she continued to sing for so long. The film shows Anita on tour in Europe well into her eighties and her making that final recording, shortly before her death, the death of an icon.

520. Gunland

Documentary
The city that Oprah and President Obama call home has become marred by murder. In response to its staggering homicide rate, locals have coined it "Chiraq" (a hybrid of Chicago and Iraq). In 2012, Chicago averaged 42 homicides per month with nearly 70% of deaths caused by guns.

Gunland begs the question, "Why Chicago?" Most would believe that hip-hop and its glorification of violence, guns and carnage is to blame for Chicago's gun-toting culture; however, this film goes beyond the headlines & stereotypes to discover that much more lies beneath the surface. The documentary attempts to discover the real reasons behind why young men and women of color are dying at the hands of their peers.

Chicago sits directly in the cross hairs of a $30 billion dollar drug trade. Half of all narcotics that enter the U.S. from Mexico can be traced back to the Sinaloa Cartel whose leader, "Jaoquin "El Chapo" Guzman calls Chicago his home. Last year Chicago's crime commission named Guzman "Public Enemy No. 1" and said his gang supplied most of the city's illicit drugs. As the saying goes where there is smoke there is fire and where there are drugs there must be guns. The documentary exposes similar contributing factors such as the connection between drug cartels & gun trafficking, discriminatory gun legislation, police involvement, unemployment and systemic issues within African-American culture to discuss how guns have become so readily available in The Windy City.

Through revealing interviews with gang members, activists, investigators & families of gun violence victims, Gunland looks to restore hope and examine solutions.

Their bold work stoppages and coordinated sit-down strikes, facing intimidation and physical violence at the hand of company thugs, shatter a status quo of greed and discrimination. The rise of the United Auto Workers union and their hard-fought contract settlements result in unprecedented quality-of-life gains, provide a voice on the job, and contribute to lifting millions of workers to a middle-class living. As UAW President for nearly 3 decades, Walter is a skilled negotiator and orator, with his brothers as advisors on community, legislative, and international affairs. The Kennedy and Johnson administrations frequently seek their counsel and the union's resources support Dr. King and the burgeoning civil rights movement. On the opposite side of this impassioned battle, a devious web of adversaries -- corrupt company officials, organized crime, and conservative lawmakers -- are threatened by the ambitious Reuther brothers and determined to silence them. Assassination attempts shake the family to its core. With increasing power and influence on the national stage, the incendiary trio face heart-wrenching consequences at the crossroads of their political loyalty and militant rank-and-file roots. Narrated by Martin Sheen, Brothers On The Line is a stirring personal story of sacrifice, triumph, and tragedy. Cue the tears, hysterics and breakdowns - and that's just the parents! Documentary
Josef Mengele, the Angel of Death, was the most notorious SS doctor at Auschwitz. He sent hundreds of thousands of Jews to their deaths and performed appalling experiments on adults and children. After the end of World War II, Mengele was one of the world's most wanted war criminals - yet for the next forty years he escaped justice.

Narrated and co-written by world-famous TV legend David Frost, The Search for Mengele traces Mengele's escape through Germany to Italy, then to Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, where he finally met his end. It examines Mengele's life through the eyes of those who knew him, revealing how the infamous Nazi doctor lived out his last years, hiding out (in perverse irony) in a multi-racial society. And it confronts the fact that to simply dismiss Mengele as a solitary monster may be too convenient. Was Mengele alone responsible, or was he the product of a warped system of values? Can this dark moment in human history be repeated in the future? Why was he never caught?

Filmed in ten countries including Germany, Israel, Poland and Brazil and featuring numerous interviews and photographs of Mengele through the years, this astonishing, disturbing film to answers these questions by uncovering not only Mengele's life and crimes, but also the complicity of those that allowed him to escape justice. In the words of Rolf Mengele, who discovered one day that his 'Uncle Fritz' was in fact his father, "if they really wanted to get him, they could have."

He discovers a terrible legacy that reverberates across the centuries; from the Emperor Constantine's vision of the cross as a sword and symbol of power, to the rise of genocidal anti-Semitism, to modern-day wars and conflicts sparked by religious extremism. At its heart, Constantine's Sword is a detective story, as Carroll journeys both into his own past - where he comes to terms with his father's role as a three-star General in the U.S. Air Force preparing for nuclear war - and into the wider world, where he uncovers evidence of church-sanctioned violence against Jews, Muslims, and others. Visiting the U.S. Air Force Academy, he and Jacoby expose how some evangelical Christians are proselytizing inside our country's armed forces and reveal the dangerous consequences of religious influence on American foreign policy. 549. Wave Twisters

Documentary
Wave Twisters - The Movie (WTM) is an eye-popping, hip-hop-meets-Hanna-Barbera, animated adventure synched skratch for skratch with DJ QBert's turntable masterpiece of the same name. Each track of Q-Bert's original album was designed to provide the audio framework for another chapter in this sci-fi/kung-fu epic; every aspect of the story - music, sound effects - even dialogue - has been accounted for and seamlessly integrated into QBert's original musical compositions. WTM gives visual expression to Q-Bert's narrative while pioneering the concept of visual skratching; sampling from a wide variety of techniques (from traditional cell animation to 3D to live action to photo collage), WTM defines a unique visual style analogous to the supercharged cutting and skratching of a turntable DJ. WTM catapults the bar on the correspondence between sound and image, taking the Fantasia concept to the next, dizzying level. When the music says, "Jump!" the animation asks, "How high?" The hero of WTM is the Inner Space Dental Commander, a cross between Luke Skywalker, David Carradine, and the family dentist, who must fulfill his destiny by reviving the "Lost Arts" (i.e., the four pillars of hip-hop culture - breakdancing, rapping, graffiti, and, most importantly, skratching). To do so, he and his posse (the mischievous medical droid, Rubbish, his lovely assistant and comrade-at-arms, Honey, and B-Boy Grandpa, the last surviving link to a bygone era when the Arts flourished) battle their way through an increasingly surreal collection of villains, pitfalls, and booby-traps. Among the villains are an elite corps of turntable warriors, played by key members of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz - QBert, Yoga Frog, and D-Styles plus DJ Flare. Their electrifying performances blaze a path of destruction which stands between the Dental Commander and his final showdown with Lord Ook, the evil mastermind behind the plot to suppress and control the Lost Arts throughout "inner space."

550. Made in L.A.

Documentary
The Emmy-winning film Made In L.A. tells the remarkable story of Maria, Lupe and Maura, three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops who embark on a three-year odyssey to win basic labor protections from a trendy clothing retailer. Hailed by The New York Times as 'an excellent documentary... about basic human dignity', and 'a rousing true story of solidarity, perseverance and triumph' by Variety, Made In L.A. offers a deeply human story about immigration, the power of unity, and the courage it takes to find your voice.Lupe Hernandez, a five-foot tall dynamo, has been working in Los Angeles garment factories since she left Mexico City at age 17. Maura Colorado left her three children in the care of relatives in El Salvador while she sought work in L.A. to support them. But the low-paid work came with a high price - wretched working conditions and an 'undocumented' status that deprived her of seeing her children for over 15 years. And, at 18, Maria Pineda came from Mexico in hopes of a better life. Twenty three years later, substandard working conditions and domestic abuse have left her struggling for her children's future and for her own human dignity. These three women, along with other immigrant workers, come together at L.A.'s Garment Worker Center to take a stand for their rights. Against all odds, these seemingly defenseless workers launch a very public challenge (a lawsuit and a boycott) to one of the city's flagship clothiers, calling attention to the dark side of low-wage labor north of the U.S.-Mexico border and revealing the social fault lines of the new globalization. As the campaign drags on through 3 long years, the workers' struggle yields hope and growth, but it is also fraught with disappointments and dangers. For Maria, Lupe and Maura, the long campaign is a turning point from victimization to empowerment - each finding strength and resources to continue, and making life-changing decisions that they never could have envisioned.

551. America the Beautiful

Documentary
The United States of America is one of the wealthiest nations on the planet with many opportunities for its citizens. In 2004 alone, Americans spent $12.4 billion (yes, billion!) on cosmetic surgery. With such an abundance of wealth, why are Americans so discontent? Consuming almost 40,000 media messages a year, young Americans are told that unless you look like a supermodel or a rock star, you're not good enough for anyone to love. In AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, filmmaker Darryl Roberts goes on a 5 year journey and illustrates how these increasingly unattainable images contribute greatly to the rise in low self-esteem, body dismorphia, and eating disorders for young women and girls who also happen to be the beauty industry's largest consumers. With appearances by Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, and Anthony Kiedis, the film reveals that too much television and easy access to plastic surgery are conventional answers, but they do not fully explain this national psychosis. But every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn’t stop. One time Scott and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn’t we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?

The band was in the home stretch of a three-plus-year campaign to record and support Worship Music and the Anthems EP, a period of time that was loaded with high points: the return of “classic era” vocalist Joey Belladonna, Worship Music making the band’s highest chart debut in two decades, the series of Big Four shows - Anthrax, Metallica, Slayer and Metallica, the four bands that wrote the speed and thrash metal road map - that culminated in the September 2011 Big Four spectacular at Yankee Stadium in the band’s home town of New York, “Anthrax Day” declared in the Bronx, becoming the first metal band to have its music (“Got The Time”) played on Mars, two Grammy nominations, and sold out shows in every corner of the globe. “We wanted to finish on a high note.

Documentary
Queen Elizabethʼs life has been a journey like no other. Throughout her reign, she has been the United Kingdom's symbol of continuity and stability. Her many visits to the nations around the world have won her the unwavering respect of her subjects and peers. The Queen has brought new trends of modernization and openness within the monarchy, and has kept the institution relevant in a rapidly changing world. Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on April 21st 1926. She was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, subsequently King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. When aged just eleven, her uncle Edward abdicated the throne when his marriage proposal to divorcee Wallis Simpson provoked a constitutional crisis. Elizabeth's father became King, and she became second in line to the throne. On her 21st birthday she pledged her devotion and loyalty to the monarchy, and vowed to serve it for as long as she lived. The announcement of her engagement to her sweetheart Prince Philip of Greece created wedding fever amongst the British public. It was a welcome distraction from the hardships of World War II, and the dawn of a new era. The wedding day became an international celebration with the worldʼs leaders gathering to witness the historic event. Elizabeth and Philipʼs happiness was enhanced almost one year later, when they welcomed their first baby, Prince Charles. The nation rejoiced at the news of the birth of the Prince. Two years later, Princess Anne was born. Whilst travelling on her way to Australia for a Royal visit, she was informed that King George VI had passed away. Elizabeth immediately returned home, and ascended to the throne as Queen Elizabeth II. The coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on June 2nd 1953, and was broadcast on television and radio all around the world. With the births of Prince Andrew and Prince Edward in the 1960ʼs, the family was complete. Over the years, it had been reported that the Queenʼs relationship with her children is at times distant, only becoming warmer since the death of the Queen Mother in 2000. Elizabethʼs commitment to the cause has always put her role as Sovereign above all personal concerns, including her own children. Since being crowned Queen of the British Commonwealth, Elizabeth has travelled near and far to meet many of her subjects, and see for herself the popularity of the British Monarchy. This has made her the most widely traveled Head of State in history, and the first reigning Monarch to circumnavigate the globe. During her reign, the Queen has not only had to contend with issues of a public nature to do with the Kingdom, but also ones of a personal nature within the Royal Family. At times she has had to navigate cautiously around the publicsʼ perception of the Monarchy, and pressure that comes from being in the public eye. There has been much speculation about whether she will allow Charles to succeed to the throne, as she has been carefully grooming Prince William to adjust to life as a future King. Without any doubt, that she is one of the most popular Monarchs in history. Queen Elizabeth II has steadfastly gone about her duties as both Princess and Queen of the British Empire. Amongst it all, she remains true to her cause -- upholding the British Monarchy in the face of an ever-changing world. Long may she Reign Supreme.

The result is a hilarious and tender offbeat journey that pays homage to lovers of bad movies and the people who make them, while investigating a deeper story abut the strange nature of celebrity, the catharsis of redemption and the humanity that exists in making even the worst movie ever made.

585. Electoral Dysfunction

Documentary
After making the eye-opening discovery that the right to vote is missing from the Constitution, political humorist Mo Rocca sets out on a road trip to see how voting works - and doesn't work - in America. He heads to Indiana, home to some of the strictest election laws in the country, and meets two feisty Hoosiers - Democrat Mike Marshall and Republican Dee Dee Benkie - who take him inside their efforts to get out every vote. As he progresses on his journey, Mo searches for the Electoral College; investigates the heated battle over Voter ID and voter fraud; critiques ballot design with Todd Oldham; and explores the case of a former felon who was sentenced to ten years in prison—for the crime of voting. Irreverent, engaging and nonpartisan, ELECTORAL DYSFUNCTION is for voters across the political spectrum who want their votes to count. Set against the backdrop of the historic 2008 election, the film is hosted by Mo Rocca, a correspondent for "CBS Sunday Morning," a panelist on NPR's "Wait, Wait...Don't Tell Me!," and a former correspondent for "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." The film was written, produced and directed by David Deschamps, Leslie D. Farrell and Bennett Singer, whose collective credits include multiple Emmy, Peabody and duPont-Columbia awards.

592. My Kid Could Paint That

Documentary
In the span of only a few months, 4-year-old Marla Olmstead rocketed from total obscurity into international renown--and sold over $300,000 dollars worth of paintings. She was compared to Kandinsky and Pollock, and called "a budding Picasso." Inside Edition, The Jane Pauley Show, and NPR did pieces, and The Today Show and Good Morning America got in a bidding war over an appearance by the bashful toddler. There was talk of corporate sponsorship, with the family fielding calls from The Gap and Crayola. But not all of the attention was positive. From the beginning, many faulted her parents for exposing Marla to the glare of the media and accused the couple of exploiting their daughter for financial gain. Others felt her work was, in fact, comparable to the great Abstract Expressionists--but saw this as emblematic of the meaninglessness of Modern Art. © 2007 Axis Films, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

593. Noam Chomsky On The World - The Chomsky Sessions

Documentary
One of the most respected intellectuals of the 20th century, Noam Chomsky has had a long and prolific career as a linguist, philosopher, and political activist. Undoubtedly, though, he is best known as the quintessential American dissident. Chomsky's criticism of U.S. foreign policy began with the Vietnam War and continued over the span of the next 40 years (and roughly as many books). NOAM CHOMSKY ON THE WORLD delves into the mind of the man himself through a series of candid interviews, lectures, and classroom discussions in which he traces the entire arc of 20th-century American politics, from 1920s public policy to 9/11. Even more importantly, the professor emeritus sketches out a history of resistance and struggle that is fundamental to his political thought and, he claims, to the "civilizing" of America. Disarmingly straightforward, tremendously informed, and profoundly insightful, Chomsky has the rare ability to illuminate larger patterns and systems, bringing viewers to a far deeper understanding of history, power, and the uniquely American privilege of protest. Thoroughly absorbing and edifying, NOAM CHOMSKY ON THE WORLD profiles the luminous thinking of a man who has spent his life striving to educate, to empower, and ultimately, to liberate.

594. Thank God It's Friday

Documentary
"Some have the idea that religious settlers are aggressive and dangerous and don't smile", says Tehiya Diteshiam. "But we're human, OK? Normal." Tehiya lives in the West Bank settlement of Halamish. With its well-swept roads, shaded parking spaces and neat rows of whitewashed houses, it's a direct contrast to the impoverished dry Palestinian village just across the valley. "We want our land back but they don't want to give it to us", explains one very young Palestinian boy to his mother. "Until they give it back, we will keep throwing rocks."
Such is the military presence in this region, opportunities for rock-throwing are plentiful. Minor acts of aggression against the nearby settlement are viewed more as a wholesome pastime than ill-advised trouble-making. Young pre-teen brothers gaily speed past their mother to the front-line to roll burning tyres down the hillside into Israeli troops.
As the Friday violence reaches its climax the Palestinian protesters try to reach the settlement and the army fights them back. Inside the settlement teenagers watch the ritual playing out; "You can see, they're trying to tell us something but we don't pay attention". But their initial confidence falters as the Palestinian determination and the violence escalates; "They should come and talk to us...We don't want to live like this every Friday. And I hope they don't " In uniquely reflexive sequences, both communities are given the opportunity to watch the troubling footage of the Friday battles. The Palestinian community is there to watch, offering loud applause. But only a handful of the settlers bother to attend their own screening. Their reaction is scornful, describing the film as overly negative; "There is no hope here if you look at this film", says Tahiya. But the documentary has troubled her and it's written across her face. With the status quo there can certainly be no hope.
