Police, Adjective

Independent
"The crime genre seduced me because, every time around, it involves you, the viewer; it's like a puzzle in which you are involved and which provokes you to foresee what is to come...Working on this film, I chose to look, in an almost clinical way, at a police procedural and the way in which cops react; I follow Cristi around the same way he follows his suspects around, with the strong belief that cinema is witness to a meaningless world." - writer-director Corneliu Porumboiu. "Confounds expectations..a subversive intellectual exercise, a philosophical jest." - Kenneth Turan, LA Times. "Exquisitely dry... just about flawless.... ranks right up there with 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS" - Phillips, Chicago Tribune.

The Crime Of Father Amaro

Drama
A priest discovers the path of virtue can be steep, and temptation can demand a heavy price, in this controversial drama from Mexico. Father Amaro (Gael Garcia Bernal) is a young Catholic priest whose mentor, the Bishop (Ernesto Gomez Cruz), expects great things from him. However, like all priests, Amaro must first be assigned where he is needed most, which leads him to the small rural community of Los Reyes, where Amaro is to assist Father Benito (Sancho Gracia). To his shock, Amaro discovers Benito is hardly following Holy Law -- he's having an affair with Sanjuanera (Angelica Aragon), a woman who runs a local restaurant, and he's been helping a drug dealer launder his profits in exchange for large donations to the church, which Benito feels is justified as the funds are being used to build a hospital and orphanage for the poor. Amaro is disgusted with Benito's actions, but he soon discovers his own weaknesses when he falls in love with Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancon), Sanjuanera's teenage daughter. As Amelia finds herself falling for Amaro, she breaks off her relationship with Ruben (Andres Montiel), a reporter. Ruben responds by publishing a story which reveals the details of Benito's dealings with the drug dealers; Benito in turn tries to lay the blame at the feet of noble Father Natalio (Damian Alcazar), whose work with local peasants has been wrongly interpreted as supporting armed revolutionary factions. As Amaro tries desperately to distance himself from the growing scandal, he receives shocking news from Amelia when he learns she's pregnant with his child. The Crime of Father Amaro's portrayal of corruption within the Catholic Church led to an outcry from Catholic organizations, both in Mexico and the United States, where they attempted to organize a boycott of the film. However, the tactic failed in Mexico, where the controversy helped to boost ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing Mexican film ever in its native country.

Welcome To Nollywood

Documentary
Welcome to Nollywood takes you inside the Nigerian film industry, which has exploded in the last ten years. Now the most popular cinema in all of West Africa - more popular even than imports of Hollywood or Bollywood films - the Nigerian film industry has distinguished itself by shooting all films (called video-films) on digital video. This has allowed production schedules to be compressed (films are shot in several days) and immediately brought to market (distribution consists of bringing films to Idumota electronics market in Lagos and selling them for home-viewing). The sheer volume of Nigerian video-films is staggering: one estimate has a film being produced for each day of the year. Nollywood is now the third largest film industry in the world, generating 286 million dollars per year for the Nigerian economy. And yet this vibrant, profitable industry is virtually unknown outside of Africa. Jamie Meltzer, director of Off the Charts: The Song Poem Story, (which premiered on PBS Independent Lens series In 2003) has created a fascinating look into this newly emerging film industry, exploring its inner workings, economic challenges, and diverse array of colorful films. Traveling to the countrys chaotic capitol, Lagos, Meltzer spent two months following three of Nigerias hottest directors, each different in personality and style, as they shot their films about love, betrayal, war, and the supernatural. Welcome to Nollywood tells the stories of these three directors and their latest productions, while also using interviews with scholars, actors, and journalists who celebrate (in insightful and often humorous ways) Nollywood as a whole, its unique character and genres, as well as its impact on the culture of West Africa and Africans at home and abroad.

Being and Becoming Chua Ek Kay

Independent
A documentary film on the controversially influential artist Chua Ek Kay. Chua Ek Kay conceptualised and established his work in a fundamental period in Singapore during the 1980s and 1990s, when both the economy and environment were rapidly changing.Throughout his professional life, the late Chua Ek Kay crossed many constraints by using traditional Chinese ink, yet developing compositions which were clearly outside Chinese aesthetic conventions. Encroaching boundaries and experimenting with new styles is hardly an issue in today's liberated contemporary art world, but back then any departure from the predictable was rarely understood in conservative Asia. Being and Becoming Chua Ek Kay takes viewers on the unseen journey of the artist at work, and explores his enduring legacy. The film reveals not only a visual journey, but also the emotional conflicts behind a particular artist's struggle. This exceptional story is told through his family, creative peers, artistic collaborators and close friends. The film offers exclusive and intimate insights into how and why the classically trained artist risked rejection to revolutionize the traditional Chinese ink art form in Singapore.

It's a Girl

Documentary
In India, China and many other parts of the world today, girls are killed, aborted and abandoned simply because they are girls. The United Nations estimates as many as 200 million girls are missing in the world today because of this so-called "gendercide". Girls who survive infancy are often subject to neglect, and many grow up to face extreme violence and even death at the hands of their own husbands or other family members. The war against girls is rooted in centuries-old tradition and sustained by deeply ingrained cultural dynamics which, in combination with government policies, accelerate the elimination of girls. Shot on location in India and China, It's a Girl reveals the issue. It asks why this is happening, and why so little is being done to save girls and women. The film tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls, of women who suffer extreme dowry-related violence, of brave mothers fighting to save their daughters' lives, and of other mothers who would kill for a son. Global experts and grassroots activists put the stories in context and advocate different paths towards change, while collectively lamenting the lack of any truly effective action against this injustice.
