Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The source material and supporting actors make A Good Woman a fairly good movie. But the performances by Helen Hunt as an aging seductress and Scarlett Johansson as a young bride are closer to mediocre. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: A Good Woman won't ruin anyone's day, but it won't make anyone's either, and it won't get the great Irish playwright anything like the admiration his work deserves. – Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times, Sep 20, 2007

Rotten: Something is wrong with A Good Woman: The lightning never strikes. It's never quite alive. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: For those in the mood for love, A Good Woman is more than good. It's one of the best films of the new year. – Bruce Westbrook, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

A Good Woman

So, being a sucker for a period piece, practically any period piece, I went ahead and purchased this movie. No rental option was available. Intriguing storyline, beautiful scenery, Tom Wilkinson superb as always. Nonetheless, Helen Hunt's performance annihilated this movie. Her delivery was forced and predictable. Her voice was shrill. A couple of times I actually said what she was going to say before she delivered the line. I had to rewind twice to listen to Hunt's lines as I caught myself staring at her mouth completely consumed by questions of why the make-up artist hadn't done a better job of touching up her lipstick instead of listening to the dialogue. I have no idea what was wrong with Johansson this time around. Flat and emotionless, sometimes nearly laughable. Even her wig seemed askew though I give it points for bringing more drama to the screen than the person wearing it. It took me three days to watch this movie and I only stuck with it because I bought the darned thing. Two stars for Tom Wilkinson, beautiful scenery and costumes.

Just a "good" movie

Lovely story line, but the acting left the movie flat. Hunt and Johannson's intepretation of their characters was passionless and forced. They appeared displaced in the pre-war era. It is worth a rental, however, if you enjoy Italian scenery.

A Good Woman

Well, for the negative reviewers among us, have ya ever heard of subtlety, nuance, wit, irony, English spoken as English, beautiful photography, incredible feeling shown by an incredible actress Helen Hunt and her foil Tom Wilkinson. This film is a treasure of the cinematic world.
For us positives, we watched it in awe of Oscar Wilde, Helen Hunt, and Tom Wilkinson. And enjoyed the Italian countryside as an aside to all the rest.
