Plot Summary

(A)sexual follows the growth of a community that experiences no sexual attraction. In 2000, David Jay came out to his parents. He was asexual and was fine with it. And he was not alone. Studies show that 1% of the population is asexual. But in a society obsessed with sex, how do you deal with life as an outsider? Combining intimate interviews, verite footage, and animation with fearless humor and pop culture imagery, David and our four other characters grapple with this universal question and the outcomes might surprise you. A FilmBuff presentation.

Brilliant for Everybody

This is a brilliant, fascinating, smart, kind, and totally engrossing documentary for FOLKS OF EVERY SEXUALITY to watch. Although it focuses on several people who are asexual, the movie also raises important questions about acceptance, love, intimacy, and even sexuality. Plus, it's fabulously done, it is so interesting, I was shocked when it was over, I thought no time had passed, I was so in to it.

A Voice for Asexuals

I cannot begin to express how this documentary makes me feel. I identify as asexual and I have been trying to see this documentary since it came out. Tucker has created a documentary that both explains being ace to people who have never heard of it before and chronicles the growth of a community. This community would not exist without David Jay's efforts. I appreciate his candor as well as that of the other aces who share in this documentary. I learned a lot about the birth of the ace community that I didn't know before. I feel that this documentary showed a wide range of aces and expressed that just like sexuals come in every flavor, so do asexuals. I do think that grey asexuality should have been included in this documentary.

If you are curious about asexuality or have a friend, family member or significant other who is asexual, this film is a great place to start. It is the only one of its kind and hopefully merely the first. If you are asexual or think you might be, this is an excellent documentary.

Interesting and Worthwhile

Certainly a well made interview style film that outlines the lifestyles and identity struggles of asexuals. More of an eye opening and educational documentary that brings people to question their need for a sexual identitiy, and why we put others on the spot for their incoherence with or lack of their own sexual identity. The major takeaway is what's the point of categorizing people? Your sexuality is like fluid, and watching this film may help you learn more about who you and others are in relation. Don't be afraid to branch out and listen to what it means to be asexual, as this is not a film just for asexuals, but a learning experience for anyone and everyone.
