Plot Summary

The new "Harold & Kumar" comedy picks up six years after the duo's last adventure. After years of growing apart, Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) have replaced each other with new friends and are preparing for their respective Yuletide celebrations. But when a mysterious package mistakenly arrives at Kumar's door on Christmas Eve, his attempt to redirect it to Harold's house ends with the "high grade" contents-and Harold's father-in-law's prize Christmas tree- going up in smoke. Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar through New York City, their search for the perfect tree almost blows Christmas Eve sky high.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: In its shaggy, pleasure-bombed, '80s-meets-2011 way, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is a deft and generous comedy... – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 8, 2011

Fresh: It's pretty much one ridiculous set-piece after another, and you absolutely don't need to be wasted to enjoy them. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Nov 4, 2011

Rotten: The third installment still reads as angry, but the ire comes across as self-loathing, the filmmakers unable to mask their cynicism about their own project. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Nov 4, 2011

Fresh: Goes out of its way to offend virtually everyone, including Mexicans, Jews, African- Americans and especially evangelical Christians. – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Nov 4, 2011

A HOLLY, JOLLY GOOD TIME!

At first glance, you might assume "A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas" was nothing more than an unnecessary third entry in the popular stoner franchise, but trust me when I say this is definitely no lump of coal. In fact, it may just be the most hilarious misadventure our two pothead protagonists have gotten themselves into so far. The main plot follows Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) as they attempt to replace a Christmas tree for Harold's girlfriend's father (Danny Trejo) after they burn it by accident. Along the way, they get kidnapped by Ukrainian gangsters and mistakenly shoot Santa Claus, but not before starring in a Broadway-style holiday show with the incomparable Neil Patrick Harris! I have to say, I was surprisingly impressed by the movie in general, and not just because it's particularly more raunchy and irreverent than the first two films in the series. Along with using 3D to its full potentiality (cocaine and marijuana smoke practically flow toward the audience), this installment actually gives us the chance to see the sweeter, more relatable side of the duo. All in all, I'd be lying if I said "Harold & Kumar 3" didn't make me laugh my butt off and get me into the holiday spirit at the same time. From the outrageous supporting cast to the blatant cultural stereotypes to the complete and utter randomness of it all, I was absolutely pleased with just about everything the flick had to offer. So in the end, if you loved watching "White Castle" and "Guantanamo Bay" the first time around, I can guarantee you won't be disappointed with this laugh-out-loud Christmas farce!
