Plot Summary

Hugh Grant (Notting Hill, Bridget Jones's Diary) is simply brilliant in this comedy hit the critics are hailing as "Hilarious!" (Premiere). Will Lightman (Grant) is a good-looking, smooth-talking bachelor whose primary goal in life is avoiding any kind of responsibility. But when he invents an imaginary son in order to meet attractive single moms, Will gets a hilarious lesson about life from a bright, but hopelessly geeky 12-year-old named Marcus. Now, as Will struggles to teach Marcus the art of being cool, Marcus teaches Will that you're never too old to grow up. About A Boy is the irresistible comedy smash that Time Magazine says is "smart, funny and winsome."

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Hugh Grant hilariously redefines the word "playboy" in the first half of this film, then gets human, without losing his comic edge, under the influence of the title waif. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Feb 10, 2014

Fresh: The first big studio movie of 2002 I didn't want to end. – David Ansen, Newsweek, Feb 3, 2009

Fresh: The directors Paul and Chris Weitz -- the American Pie brothers -- have tried hard not to make a tearjerker, and at its best the movie is knowing and tart. – David Denby, New Yorker, Feb 10, 2014

Fresh: The movie occasionally strains for crowd-pleasing moments as it pumps up the drama toward the end, but it more than earns our indulgence. – Mark Caro, Chicago Tribune, Feb 10, 2014

a feel-good keeper

This is a feel-good movie that touches just about all of us in some way. The empty bachelor, the struggling mother, the boy dealing with growing up in less than idea conditions. It's a pleasing, if not challenging flick. Definitely worth a look.

You have to love this movie!

This movie is sweet and funny. You have to love this movie!

Love this movie!!!!!!

This is one of my favorite films. I love Hugh Grant and I think this is his best film (but I love most all his movies). This movie is not the typical Hugh Grant romantic comedies that he is known for but really addresses many common issues. A definite must see. And, I wish iTunes would get more of his films. I hope they will get Notting Hill soon!!! (my other fave)
