Plot Summary

Romance can be risky, perplexing and filled with the perils of miscommunication - and that's if you aren't Adam, for whom life itself is this way. In this heartfelt romantic comedy, Hugh Dancy stars as Adam, a handsome but intriguing young man who has all his life led a sheltered existence - until he meets his new neighbor Beth, a beautiful, cosmopolitan young woman who pulls him into the outside world, with funny, touching and entirely unexpected results. Their implausible and enigmatic relationship reveals just how far two people from different realities can stretch in search of an extraordinary connection.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: At its best, Adam makes the viewer understand the frustration of living in a world in which everyone is a stranger. – Dan Kois, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Written and directed by Max Mayer, this anodyne romantic comedy is as predictable as the alphabet but should hold particular appeal to women whose maternal impulses inflect their mating instincts. – Cliff Doerksen, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Sure, it's complicated, but isn't that always true of romance? And doesn't it blow the hinges off the universe -- every single time? – Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Adam is As Good as It Gets with a dash of Rain Man, movie comfort food, but still charms us through the familiar rhythms of its story. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, Aug 23, 2010

Great flick, but a comedy?

This is a great movie, but I wouldn't call it a comedy. It has funny moments.

Also, is it un-PC to refer to Asperger's Syndrome, or is iTunes just trying to gloss over a major detail of the movie? Actually, it's even misleading to say that adam has "led a sheltered existence." What does that mean? He has Asperger's. That is not exactly a sheltered existence.

I think this is a great movie, but I'm disappointed that somebody (the producers? the studio? Apple?) is misrepresenting the movie. That feels disingenuous, and it makes me wonder why they did it. I am suggesting that they did it because they don't want to bring up something that might make viewers uncomfortable.

Captivating, Beautiful and Astounding

As viewers, we are seldom exposed to films like Adam, I'm glad I took a chance and watched it. The movie is one of few that takes a straighforward approach to human compassion, understanding and love rather than taking a hpyerbolic approach to all emotion. The movie is subtle, and so is its humor; this is no Animal House. In many ways it shares a great deal with movies like "Forest Gump" and "Life is Beautiful" than any full blown comedy. Its humor lies more in the way Adam and Beth deal with adversity and their own limitations than on witty one liners and absurdity. I can think of very few movies I can recommend more strongly.

5 stars for Dancy

Absolutely loved this movie.
Saw in Denver months ago in a private showing. It has been a long time since a movie just really captivated me the entire time. Hugh Dancy did an outstanding job.

You will Laugh and for the soft hearted some tears might develop in the corner of your eye. One might just fall.
