A Remarkable View into Senegalese Youth and Politics

I'm a high school teacher and am always looking for new media to engage my students in an effort to get them interested in issues of global importance. "African Underground: Democracy in Dakar" delivers an unprecedented view into the world of African Hip-Hop and demonstrates how young people can make a difference in their community using music and media as the medium for social change. Excellent story and clearly well researched. Highly recommended for high school teachers and college professors looking for new media to engage their students.

Gripping and informative

This was a very compelling documentary and pretty unique in its examination of the role of hip hop as the voice of the youth in politics. It was well put together and provides a unique view of hip hop culture and politics through the lens of emcees from Senegal. Its a reminder of how the artform has expanded from its origins in the Bronx, NY to a global phenomenon that can even play a role in the election of the leader of a country.

Fabulously empowering and thought-provoking

All I can say is bravo! This film explores an area that really hasn't been touched upon enough. It aims to not only understand but to give voice to a culture that is largely misrepresented. Beautiful cinematography and GREAT music. I was very impressed!!
