Plot Summary

Academy Award-winning director Akira Kurosawa ("The Seven Samurai," "Ran"), whose cinematic genius has inspired such classic films as "Star Wars" and "The Magnificent Seven," presents his 28th, and most personal, film. Visually splendid, Kurosawa's film consists of eight powerful vignettes, one of which features acclaimed director Martin Scorsese as painter Vincent Van Gogh. "Breathtaking... dazzling," says The New York Times.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It's something altogether new for Kurosawa, a collection of short, sometimes fragmentary films that are less like dreams than fairy tales of past, present and future. The magical and mysterious are mixed with the practical, funny and polemical. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Dreams will knock your eyes out without ignoring the mind and heart. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: It's dreamy only in one respect: It's a snooze. – Hal Hinson, Washington Post, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: In the uneven career of Akira Kurosawa, two limiting factors were sentimentality and preachiness, and both come to the fore in this 1990 collection of eight dreams. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Powerful, Beautiful, Intense

I highly recommend that you watch this on a screen big enough to actually enjoy the scope of the cinematography employed. The movie is still breathtaking on a smaller screen but it is stunning on something larger. Because it is subtitled, I recommend watching it more than once so you can get both the story and the visual presentation of the story. This is a movie I keep in my permanent collection. The stories are strong and, the one that touched me the most left an unanswered ending. I believe this is brilliant because it allows the viewer to make the movie their own, or more importantly to personally identify with it based on their experiences and nature. I cannot recommend this movie more.

Wonderful

This movie show's Akira Kurosawa's Dreams he has had. They are beautiful, and very interesting.

A Truly Beautliful Film

Dreams is a remarkable work. It is one of my favorite Kurosawa film. The vignettes are little morality tales--dreams for our time. Buy it, rent it, but do not pass up this experience.
