Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Incidentally, it's a bad idea to try bailing out hopelessly flat comedy with outtakes that are funnier than the in-takes manage to be.
Rotten: What turns the witlessness rancid is the way the movie is saturated in the very corruption it thinks it's ridiculing.
Rotten: A caustic but under-funny "expose" of the venality of the motion picture business.
Rotten: Burning is too good for such a wretched fiasco; only a surgical nuclear strike could suitably destroy what has to be one of the most enervating comedies ever made.

How is this film on iTunes?
Don't believe the posted review. This film was made for $10 million and grossed $45,000 - less (inflation-adjusted) than "Plan 9 from Outer Space" made in theaters. It is one of the most painfully unfunny films ever made. How Eric Idle and other celebrities were talked into it, I will never know. I'm surprised that iTunes even knows about the film, let alone is selling it. FYI, the title refers to the pseudonym "Alan Smithee", given to a film director who disowns a film. The director of the film is Arthur Hiller, but he hated the film so much that he got an Alan Smithee credit for it, making the film "An Alan Smithee Film..." literally an Alan Smithee film.
dont judge this by the reviews.
hey - it won 5 awards! Worst New Star: Joe Eszterhas (Tied with Jerry Springer for Ringmaster) Worst Original Song: Joe Eszterhas and Gary G-Wiz Worst Picture: Ben Myron Worst Screenplay: Joe Eszterhas Worst Supporting Actor: Joe Eszterhas hahaha
It's ok
I wouldn't tell you to go out and rent this film if you have better stuff to do but it's an entertaining hour and a half even if some stuff in the movie doesn't make much sense like the scene where they cut to Alan in the insane asylum staring out into space for no reason and where they cut to Alan trying to act gangsta.
