Plot Summary
Romantic Comedy. Alex (Luke Wilson) is an author whose writer's block and gambling debts have landed him in a jam. In order to get loan sharks off his back, he must finish his novel in 30 days or wind up dead. To help him complete his manuscript he hires stenographer Emma (Kate Hudson). As Alex begins to dictate his tale of a romantic love triangle to the charming yet somewhat opinionated stenographer, Emma challenges his ideas at every turn. Her unsolicited yet intriguing input begins to inadvertently influence Alex and his story and soon real life begins to imitate art.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Meant to be a funny, feel-good love story. Instead, it feels wan and uninspired, despite its likable cast.
Rotten: A desperately slight romantic comedy marked by contrived romance and little comedy.
Rotten: Dull and listless from the start, partly because the leads fail to connect and partly because both the script and the direction let them down.
Rotten: This isn't one for the time capsule -- just bury it.

A charming romance
We were surprised that we hadn't heard of this movie before. The plot was very interesting, and the interweaving of the story with the author's real life was well done. The dialogue is witty and entertaining, and Wilson and Hudson carry the characters well. If you are looking for a safe, romantic comedy, then this is the movie for you.
Really cute chick flick
If you're in the mood for something sweet and romantic, I'd have to say that this movie is a good pick. Even though it is somewhat predictable, it is worth seeing and has an obvious feel-good ending.
So it's not Oscar-Worthy. Who cares?
Movies don't have to be deep to be enjoyable and I, for one, loved every second of this film. It left me feeling good, which is a pleasant change from the depressing tones in recent cinema. It can also make you feel creative, if you're someone like a wannabe writer or movie-maker--watching Alex's creative process is cathartic. It might not be perfect, it might not even be "quality," but it's fun, happy-go-lucky, and pretty much a standard romantic comedy, while still managing to be original. Don't make your expectations higher than they should be and you'll enjoy the movie thoroughly as it is.
