Plot Summary
Academy Award®-winner Robert Redford stars in an open-water thriller about one man's battle for survival against the elements. Using a sextant and nautical maps to chart his progress, a lone sailor is forced to rely on his survival skills and ingenuity when his sailboat is damaged at sea. But with the sun unrelenting, sharks circling and supplies dwindling, the ever-resourceful man soon finds himself staring mortality in the face.

All is Lost
This is really a terrible movie.I say that not because Robert Redford's acting, but because of the technical direction of the film. I am an ocean sailor with years of experience on the ocean. There are so many wrong things that are portrayed in the film that I just couldn't accept the premise as real. For example,the first thing that you do when there is water entering your boat is to stuff the openning with any rags, towels, cushions or whatever is available to stop taking on water, since the boat is in danger of sinking. Then one could never patch a water breach with epoxy and fiberglass while underway, the number of wraps of a line around a winch, you can't pull lines easily in a storm. You can't drop the mainsail when there is wind in it. After his radio died then he decides to climb the mast and reattach an antenna fitting that one would never know that it was loose.
He also doesn't even know how to secure his fresh water supply that is in a jug. Oh it is absolutely insane. No one in their right mind would be out in the ocean without knowing the fundamentals. And in the last scenes, the water scenes are inconceivable! No one floats or sinks like that.It is ridiculous.
At this point about 18 individuals have voted one starout of approx 150 reviews. I assume that most of them know how to handle the fundamentals of a sailboat, thus the very low rating.

You've got to be kidding...
I thought it was pretty boring, no character development, little dialog, little potable water. The movie felt like it was missing the first half hour and the last 15 minutes. Life of Pi and Cast Away made this movie look like a real stinker. But if you're into watching sailboats sink rather slowly, Redford's character bumping his head and going unconscious while the boat ever so slowly fills with water, then this is the movie for you. Hopefully, the documentary "Maidentrip" will take out the bad taste in my mouth left from too much salty Robert Redford.
