Plot Summary

Roger Cobb (Steve Martin) is a swinging bachelor. Edwina Cutwater (Lily Tomlin) is an ailing spinster who is given a second chance at life when her soul is "transported" into that of a another woman. Unfortunately, the guru-in-charge goofs, and Edwina's soul winds up taking over the entire right side of Roger, who now must learn to cope with being half the man he was. Now Edwina and Roger are living together in the same body. He's losing his job. He's losing his girlfriend. And he just can't seem to get her out of his system! Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin make the perfect Couple of Comedy in this hilariously concocted plot.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Mr. Martin's astonishing performance is the film's most conspicuous asset, but the entire cast is good. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Feb 2, 2009

Fresh: Martin vaults to the top of the class with his brazen, precise performance. This one goes in the time capsule. – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Patently ridiculous, but acceptable because of the charm of the characters. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It scores a lot of points by speculating on the ways in which a man and a woman could learn to coexist in such close quarters. Against all the odds, a certain tenderness and sweetness develops by the end of the film. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Steve Martin at his BEST

This movie is a little dated in look (from the early '80s). However the comedy is priceless. Steve Martin is brilliant at physical comedy - his talents to shine brightly. I wasn't much of a Lily Tomlin fan before this movie. From my perspective she was still the "one ringy dingy" phone operator from Rowen and Martin. However this movie converted me to being one of her fans. She is both funny and she pulls off a very difficult role (hateful shrew yet strangely you end up rooting for her). The story is well executed and fun to watch. A great date movie (Man Card Alert - this is not a sappy love story) or just a hanging with your friends with your beverage of choice.
