Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Messrs. Milestone, Abbott and Anderson in this film have contributed a memorable piece of work to the screen.
Fresh: From such grisly materials the popular cinema is rarely drawn. The film is monumental in the courage that risked its manufacture.
Fresh: A harrowing, gruesome, morbid tale of war.
Fresh: All Quiet on the Western Front is the definitive World War I motion picture, the best of a surprisingly small class of movies.

Wonderful Piece of Film History
Classic, all-too-familiar story of homefront war propaganda, and its stark contrast with the realities of armed conflict. Being told from the German side adds to the interestingness of this film. Considering the technology and story telling tools of 1929, this version holds up very well to the test of time, and we find ourselves in the end almost as worn down as the main character. "Empfehlenswert," as the Germans say.
Classic forever.
I think that having a film such as this in black and white reels gives it a certain extra charm to its emotional value. That's what I think anyway. Also, This is the first edition of a film based on the great novel. If anyone is looking for the second version, the one that has the main character sketching birds, this is not that version.
You will never look at warfare the same way again...
This movie literaly is the best war movie ever made. Not because of big budget special effects, but the plotline is what makes it so good(not to mention what is probably the most realistic battle scenes ever made). The ending is extremely sad, unusual for any war movie. And when the hero goes back to his home on leave, what he sees proves the phrase, "You can never go home again".
