Plot Summary
Calling all fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder! The idyllic childhood of the man who would become the husband of America's favorite pioneer author is celebrated in Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura. Inspired by Wilder’s second novel, Farmer Boy, this special documentary is part 19th century history and part historical biography, told using dramatic re-enactments shot at the restored Wilder farm, archival photographs, and animated versions of Garth Williams' iconic illustrations from Farmer Boy. The timeless and beautiful events of Almanzo’s 9th year, as detailed in Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura, include his earnest yearning to become a great horseman, his disdain for Saturday night baths, and the joy of eating apple pie at every meal. Dean Butler, who portrayed Almanzo Wilder in the iconic Little House on the Prairie television series, directs and narrates the documentary. This is a must-have item for serious fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder and Little House.

Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura
As a little girl I read the entire Little House series and Farmer Boy was always one of my favorites. My father was a career military man and my family traveled throughout my young life. My Little House books brought this once shy girl some much needed comfort.
A romantic at heart I've always enjoyed Laura and Almanzo's courtship and became fascinated with wanting to know more about the man who stole Laura's heart. Having never visited the Wilder homestead this documentary made me feel as though I had stepped back in time and placed myself there. I love how the pictures in the book seem to come to life on the screen, combine that with the actors and one gets a sense of what farming life was like back in the 1800's.
Narrated paragraphs from the books tied in with actual footage from the homestead, gives one the ability to actually visualize the Wilder family living on this land. So much is known about Laura Ingalls's childhood because of all the other books in her series. But only Farmer Boy lets us peek into the lives of Wilders. Dean Butler does a great job in narrating this documentary, combining facts from the book along with historical facts from this time period.
As a Little House enthusiast, I love this documentary...
