Plot Summary

The United States of America is one of the wealthiest nations on the planet with many opportunities for its citizens. In 2004 alone, Americans spent $12.4 billion (yes, billion!) on cosmetic surgery. With such an abundance of wealth, why are Americans so discontent? Consuming almost 40,000 media messages a year, young Americans are told that unless you look like a supermodel or a rock star, you’re not good enough for anyone to love. In AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, filmmaker Darryl Roberts goes on a 5 year journey and illustrates how these increasingly unattainable images contribute greatly to the rise in low self-esteem, body dismorphia, and eating disorders for young women and girls who also happen to be the beauty industry's largest consumers. With appearances by Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, and Anthony Kiedis, the film reveals that too much television and easy access to plastic surgery are conventional answers, but they do not fully explain this national psychosis.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Clueless, directionless and altogether pointless, America the Beautiful will outrage only those who have spent the last 50 years in suspended animation. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Hardly revelatory, sometimes downright redundant pic nevertheless covers its myriad bases succinctly, while rejecting both grandstanding indignation and self-nullifying 'fairness'. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: In the documentary America the Beautiful, Roberts explores the cult of beauty in the United States and mostly succeeds in unmasking the flaws of fetishizing skin-deep beauty. – Leba Hertz, San Francisco Chronicle, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: Though not the most sophisticated movie, Darryl Roberts' earnest documentary gets its points across with enough power to make it a valuable experience for both adolescent girls and their parents. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

very nice

very insightful. gets you thinking. interesting to see how the world really is like and realize that your apart of it.

Recovering

As someone recovering from severe anorexia, i found this documentary great at looking at the things that sometimes enable an eating disorder to begin. Media plays a role as does the fashion industry. The images we see everyday are of tall thin beautiful women. We think this is the norm but in reality its not and I think Darryl does a great job at showing how damaging trying to attain that perfection can be.

Beautifully done

Seriously opens your eyes to some of the absurdity that we fall for in America. You will be shocked, relieved, comforted and enlightened. I felt embarrassed for having held myself to some of the things that this documentary touches on. I recommend it to every American woman.

Beautifully done...ironically.
