Plot Summary
Companion Julian Kay is on the prowl and looking for someone to please. Boyish and sensual, he speaks five or six languages, and is equally comfortable as a chauffeur for a wealthy middle-aged matron, and as a translator/companion for the lonely wife of an executive. He is the American Gigolo. But Julian's love-for-sale lifestyle turns deadly when a client is murdered and Julian becomes the prime suspect. Richard Gere is electrifying as Julian in this stylish, sexually charged drama from Paul Schrader (Light Sleeper, Cat People). Costarring Lauren Hutton.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Schrader's development of the frame-up story is mechanically melodramatic, and Gere, essentially a boring actor, doesn't help much either. He just cannot carry a picture, even when his passivity and gentleness well serve some aspects of his character...
Fresh: The whole movie has a winning sadness about it; take away the story's sensational aspects and what you have is a study in loneliness.
Fresh: Schrader manages to underline the glamour of the protagonist's profession while at the same time illustrating its seedy underside.

HE"S SO HOT
Just look at the cover, I mean who wouldn't want to look at that. Paul Schrader is an amazing guy who never lets you down. You won't be dissappointed. ABSOLUTE FAVORITE FILM OF 2001!!!!!!
Underrated modern noir
Like The Ghost Writer or Drive, if you peel back the particular style and context of the era, it's essentially a noir film that could have been made in 1945 — a story about morally suspect but not fairly conventional people who make one wrong decision that spirals out of control. I love this film. It's written and directed by the Taxi Driver screenwriter with a soundtrack by the guy who did Top Gun. That pretty much sums it up.
