Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Combines gore, quiet dread, feminist conviction and a visual classicism, often using a red palette, with impressive, unbelabored dexterity. – Andy Webster, New York Times, May 30, 2013

Rotten: If these loose threads and underdeveloped aspects leave American Mary less than fully satisfying, it's still a novel ride that confidently mixes horror, humor and offbeat character fillips. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, May 28, 2013

Rotten: Writer-director siblings Jen and Sylvia Soska allow their film to turn slack and unfocused after an enticingly lurid, wickedly tense first half. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, May 31, 2013

Fresh: It's a truly interesting slasher fest; in this one, the heroine gets to be both beauty and beast. – Farran Smith Nehme, New York Post, May 31, 2013

Bloody Mary

The Soska Sisters have struck gold with this movie.
Horror, humor, & great music.

Incredible Work of Art!

AMERICAN MARY is a beautifully twisted and socially aware film that anyone who enjoys a great piece of cinema will not want to miss. I want to grab the attention of those who tend to overlook genre films as “low art.” I urge you to put your preconceived notions aside and take a chance on this visually striking work of art by two passionate feminist filmmakers. Jen and Sylvia Soska continue to top themselves and push boundaries that need some serious nudging. AMERICAN MARY is a game changer that throws us into a world that many will find heartbreakingly familiar, psychologically terrifying, bloody in all the right places, and thoroughly crafted poetic filmmaking from start to finish.
MARY is the ultimate anti-hero. She personifies the collective anger and frustrations shared by women with heads bruised by glass ceilings, women who have been taken advantage of in places meant to be safe, women who did what they had to in order to survive regardless of the consequences.
MARY will spark many meaningful and critical conversations about ethics, health care, feminism, body modification, trust, and trying to gain control of your life when everything around you seems to be falling apart.
In short, AMERICAN MARY, is, well, downright awesome!
