Plot Summary

Chosen by the man himself, the Kevin Smith Movie Club presents American Milkshake. In mid-90's America, bookish high-school student Jolie knows the only way to get in with the gangsta crowd is to make the varsity basketball team. He wants an edge like Henrietta -- his secret girlfriend who is pregnant with another man’s baby – while still being popular with the cheerleaders. Making the team not only means approval from the inner-city crew of Maple Avenue, but also gets him a step closer to being the one thing he is not – black.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: "American Milkshake" merrily bumps along as if it were the first movie to find humor in a white kid's idolizing desire to "be black," whatever that may mean to him. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Sep 5, 2013

Rotten: "Milkshake" sucks all the flavor out of a tasty premise ... – Rob Nelson, Variety, Feb 1, 2013

Rotten: The script is short on details and insight, and when asked to comment on this condition - or the script's sketch of a culture on the cusp of the Internet revolution - the film, like its dirtbag protagonist, just shrugs. – Annlee Ellingson, Los Angeles Times, Sep 5, 2013

Rotten: The fact that Jolie isn't very likable would be less of a problem if this film were actually funny, but his selfish disregard for those around him only ends up making us feel bad for the people who care about him. – Sherrie Li, Village Voice, Sep 4, 2013

Customer Reviews

An indie winner from Sundance.

Loved this movie. Saw it at Sundance this year. It is the comic tale of a clueless high schooler whose misguided worldview gets him in all sorts of trouble - and unlike your typical feel good comedy, he never comes around. It is based in the Washington D.C. area and the local slang is spot on.

white boy in a black comedy

Gotta love a movie that gets you laughing and squirming uncomfortably in almost equal measures. Definitely worth watching if you grew up in the 90s.
