Plot Summary
The hit of the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, American Movie is the hilarious and intense story of one man's obsession to make movies. Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, is a long way from Hollywood, but Mark Borchardt has a dream. Armed with a driving ambition and nothing to lose, the fast-talking Borchardt enlists friends, local thespians and unwilling family members to help him finish his no-budget horror film, Coven. The camera doesn't flinch as it captures every emotional crisis and financial pitfall in his two-year odyssey. What emerges is a bizarre, yet surprisingly heartfelt, documentary portrait of a true American character. Welcome to the "Real World."

Indie Cult Classic
I've seen this film three or four times and never tire of it. For those familiar with mid-America - meaning accents, wood panelling, trucks, trees and all that - you'l find it particularly amusing. The film follows the relentlessly optimistic passion of a young guy trying to fulfill his dream of making a feature length film. The characters involved, within and outside the film, are just precious. This is one of those films that crosses many audience types to appeal to many, those who relate to the characters or those who are utterly amused at their really strange but so common Mid-western existence full of the bizarre and the ordinary of everyday life. If you haven't seen this one yet, give it a go. I think it's even better as a midnight movie. Then, when you're done, Google the filmmaker to see what has since become of him. Highly, highly recommended.
A Fun Little Documentary
The film is an amusing chronicle of a small town man's dream to make a feature length film. We see the trials and tribulations that the aspiring filmmaker goes through, and the innocence and sincerity as the town helps him to succeed.
