Plot Summary

The life of underground comic book writer Harvey Pekar is chronicled in this exceptionally droll film. Told through a collage of dramatic sequences, interviews with the real Pekar and his pals, and quirky animated sequences, this cinematic comic book follows Pekar's career, artistic and otherwise; his marriage; his 'cancer year'; and even his boisterous television appearances.

Fresh: A glorious rebuke to all this summer's recycled, effects-ridden, laboriously "fun" Hollywood disappointments piled along the wayside like so many crashed cars. – David Ansen, Newsweek, Jul 14, 2010

Fresh: I can't imagine how the filmmakers went about it, let alone pulled the whole thing off, but their film comes together in unpredictable and remarkably pleasurable ways. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Apr 12, 2013

Fresh: We're constantly kept on our toes regarding issues of representation while Pekar's sour but indefatigible working-class skepticism carries us along. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The kind of movie that sticks with you for days, your admiration growing each time you remember it. – Eric Harrison, Houston Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Perfect!

Sometimes you watch a movie and just before you watch it, you have absolutely no desire to watch it. When it's over you can't believe how amazing it was and you respect everyone involved more than ever! That is this movie. Just a perfect piece about how people are different, but also the same. Wow!!! Are people really different in this movie and the fact that they are real people makes this film that much more special! Rest in peace Harvey! Thanks for being real!
