Plot Summary

Following the death of his mother, Martin (Mathieu Demy) travels to California to settle her estate. When the heartfelt recollections of family friend Linda (Geraldine Chaplin) challenge his own negative memories of his mother, Martin finds himself searching for the truth behind not only her forgotten past, but also his own. An old photograph of his mother with a pretty Mexican girl sets off Martin’s journey south of the border in a red Mustang, determined to find the woman who may unravel the mystery behind his mother’s enigmatic life. Ending up in a dingy Tijuana sex club, Martin meets a broken down stripper named Lola (Salma Hayek), who holds the secret of Martin’s past - and the key to his future. From writer/director Demy comes a heartbreaking tale of lost family, found memories, and owning up to the choices that ultimately define a life.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It is wistful and nostalgic, and at the same time full of restless curiosity. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jun 14, 2012

Fresh: Though Demy's approach breaks no new ground, directorially speaking, Martin's personal journey finds a fresh angle on a universal piece of wisdom. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Jun 11, 2012

Rotten: Americano, which Demy also wrote and stars in, is an ambivalent, occasionally touching work of homage to his parents, yet one whose clumsiness only underscores the superiority of their directly quoted films. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Jun 12, 2012

Rotten: Scenes of the director as a school-age boy in a Varda film are haunting, but end up simply sparking a desire to see Varda's work. It may take time for the son to catch his own wave. – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News, Jun 14, 2012

its a good movie.salma is terrific as Lola.altought the movie was kind of slow,it has its great moments.see it and enjoy salma as stripper<hot!

Terrible

This is one reason this film didn't get into the theater. Save your money and wait until there is nothing else to watch on cable tv.

I liked it.

It is slow slow to start off, but give it some time and it gets good. Only watched it because I saw a chance to see the beautiful Salma Hayek body on the screen lol. She is a lovely actress;she does a great job in her role as Lola. The movies not bad it's just a little slow.
