Plot Summary

An annual 4th of July weekend hosted by troubled couple Wendy (Amy Smart) and Ellis (Josh Leonard) is seen through the eyes of Joey (Johnny Sequoia), Wendy's ten year old daughter. Ellis is a trust fund baby who is devoted to Wendy and Joey, but oblivious to the fact that his wife feels disconnected from him; Wendy, a former college radical, feigns a happiness she has secretly lost. Among the couple's invited guests are: Saul, former husband of Wendy, a successful writer whom we come to discover has never written a thing in his life; Will, Saul's alcoholic ghost writer who is suffering from writer’s block; Emma, Saul’s wife, who is having an affair with Will. And Hal, the rootless hippie life coach and Wendy’s best friend. Into this combustible mix walks Chad, a nature photographer who forces the old friends into uncomfortable situations that reveal long buried secrets and cause the group to re-examine their relationships over the course of the weekend.

Really Great Movie

I watched this film at the Nantucket Film Festival and I must say.... Really a fantastic watch. So impressed by the cast on this one! Especially Amy Smart. You get to watch a disfunctional group of people interact with one another, mirrored with the philosphical conquest of Ravens. The cinematography alone is worth the watch! Definitely buy this and watch it at home, or go see it on the silver screen - You certainly won't be disappointed!

Most people are nice when you finally see them

Among Ravens is a quiet, contemplative sort of film that builds up to an ending that will leave you reconsidering your treatment of people you’ve often considered “strange.” Johnny Sequoyah gives a simply moving performance, accompanied by the talented Will McCormack, whose character befriends hers early on in the movie in a friendship that’s reminiscent of Boo Radley and Scout’s connection in To Kill a Mockingbird, albeit further developed. The two of them are surrounded by a lively cast of characters who are attempting to sort out their own lives as they reunite for Fourth of July weekend, while also reacting to Will McCormack’s character’s unexpected arrival within their group. The cinematography is beautiful, I’d never known Idaho could be so picturesque, but it was filmed with a love and care that certainly shines throughout the entire movie.

What a great film!

I had no idea what to expect when I sat down to see this film, but I was very impressed. I was delighted to see one of my favorite actresses, Amy Smart, and although I haven’t heard much about them I was very impressed with Will McCormack and Johnny Sequoyah. I really, really loved the relationship between their characters. The story was very different, and enjoyed how the writer incorporated the ravens theme. And I would have never guessed this was shot in Idaho. All of the characters are very well developed, and when paired with the beauty of Idaho, it makes for a wonderful movie.
