Plot Summary

A successful African-American (Oscar-nominated Samuel L. Jackson) buys a vacation home and moves into a conservative, all-white neighborhood. One night he is inadvertently suspected of robbing his own home when he attempts to disarm his car alarm. In a series of mishaps and public relations bungles, the local police chief (Dabney Coleman -- "You've Got Mail," "Stuart Little"), who happens to be up for re-election, hires a drifter (Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage) to pose as a thief so the local police have a "legitimate" reason for being at the scene of the "crime," and to cover up their blunder.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A hhandicapped satirical farce whose roots are not in life but in other, better movies and sitcoms. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Sep 16, 2008

Rotten: A one-joke sketch that doesn't work as a feature. – Lawrence Cohn, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Cage is a font of funny character weirdness. This movie marks the least of his offerings. Jackson, as the relative straight man, has little to work with. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Sep 16, 2008

Rotten: Although the movie strives mightily to teach its lesson, which is that you cannot judge a man by the color of his skin, the humor is undermined by the sadness of the basic situation. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010
