The Real Deal
This is the movie horror fans like me have been waiting for. This movie is genuinely scary. No kidding. I waited for the Conjuring. Reviews all said it was scary. It was a very good movie. Not scary at all. This move is SCARY! I dead seriously thought about shutting it off and waiting until daylight to finish it. I thank the people who wrote and made this movie for genuinely scaring me. My only quarrel is the dude could have turned on a light. Roaming around every night with a flashlight in your own house is just dumb. Flick a switch already.
Not bad
An American Ghost Story is a great little horror film. A young author desperate to make something of his professional career rents a haunted house in hopes that something dramatic will happen that he can then write about. He eventually estranges himself from everyone he knows, just as the goings-on get weird.
This "made-on-a-shoestring" production was really well done. It depends more on atmosphere than special effects, which mostly works. The original score, while repetitive at times, compliments the action.
Speaking of the action, you've got to accept it to get into it. See that guy in the sheet above? Get used to him. Like, really used to him. If you can accept that the baddie is a guy in a sheet, you'll enjoy the movie. Otherwise, it's a guy in a sheet.
I've seen seriously worse low-budget horror movies. This is no "The Shining," but its head-and-shoulders above its B-movie siblings.
Notc bad, and it definitely made me jump a few times.
As someone who has seen some of the most disturbing horror films to date (Inside, Martyrs, Grotesque, ext.) I am pretty desensitized when it comes to being truly scared. Watching this film, however, I jumped, shouted major expletives, and was just genuinely creeped out. It is low budget horror at its finest; it doesn't try to do too much, and what it does it does very well. I liked it.
