Plot Summary
In 1818, the family began to experience disturbances on their property. At first, slight, unexplained noises, but the spirit began to grow, becoming aggressive and singling out the father, John, and his only daughter Betsy. The family desperately searched for the cause of the spirit in the hope of finding a way of defeating it, but the spirit continued its brutal assault. It developed voices and began speaking to the family, but refusing to say why it was there. Then, finally it pronounced a death sentence on John. Within a year, he was dead. Shortly, thereafter, the spirit left the family in peace, but never the same. It would not be until years later that we would be taken back to the terrible night the spirit was born and find out the horrific truth about its nature and origin...

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Things go bump in the night in this 19th-century ghost story, but it's the bump of emptying seats, as audiences flee in boredom, that will haunt you for days.
Rotten: A standard, creaking, fake-spooky ghost story...
Rotten: The impassioned performances make you care what happens to these people, even when the film's noisy overindulgence makes you almost wish their home would collapse on itself like The Fall of the House of Usher.
Rotten: This is the type of movie that you should be getting for free on television.

Finally a quality horror movie
In an age when bloody slasher flicks are given more cred than good old suspense driven ghost stories, An American Haunting shines. The acting is brilliant and the music is so chilling that you find your skin covered with goosebumps just from listening to the soundtrack. I highly recommend this film. You will particularly enjoy it if you like The Exorcist, The Shining, The Exorcism of Emily Rose or The Haunting.
Good movie, but...
They should have never green lit the script. They were more to the story than what was in the film. I would have liked to had seen the Bell Witch encounter Andrew Jackson.
so good!
I saw it like just recently and it was so good. It kept you like on the edge of your seat!!!!! I loved it. Also how it was cool since it is true, and old fashin <33
