Plot Summary
In 1966, General Motors, the most powerful corporation in the world, sent private investigators to dig up dirt on Ralph Nader, an obscure thirty-two-year-old public interest lawyer, who had written a book critical of one of their cars, the Corvair. The scandal that ensued after the smear campaign was revealed, launched Ralph Nader into national prominence and established him as the leader of the modern Consumer Movement. Over the next thirty years and without ever holding public office, Nader built a legislative record that rivals any contemporary president. Many things we take for granted including seat belts, airbags, product labeling, no nukes, even the free ticket you get after being bumped from an overbooked flight are largely due to the efforts of Ralph Nader and his citizen groups. Yet today, when most people hear his name, they think of the man who cost the Democrats the Presidential election. After sustaining his popularity and effectiveness over an unprecedented amount of time, he now has become a pariah even among former friends and allies. An Unreasonable Man traces the life and career of Ralph Nader, one of the most unique, important, and controversial political figures of our time.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A perceptive and beautifully made documentary portrait of Nader.
Fresh: The compelling documentary An Unreasonable Man carries the tag line, 'Ralph Nader: How do you define a legacy?' but it might just as easily have asked, 'Who gets to define the legacy?'
Fresh: If you can detach yourself from the back-and-forth vituperation (perhaps an impossible project), the Nader story begins to resemble a grand tragedy about the American left.
Fresh: Surely, Ralph Nader deserves better press than he's been getting ever since the 2004 elections -- and the legendary consumer advocate and so-called presidential spoiler receives his due, from both sides, in the documentary An Unreasonable Man.

Nader is still a Raider
Magnificant documentary about the legendary consumer advocate. A must for young people, who won't know about Ralph Nader if all they've been exposed to is corporate news and corporate school textbooks. Great extras on Disc 2 about America's crazy electoral process and how the most qualified candidate in US history - in fact, he was overqualified - was scapegoated by the Democrats and labeled a "spoiler." Are the Democratic and Republican parties the true spoilers, happily handing the public's interests over to corrupt corporations? Is it a surprise that they try to marginalize America's top corporate crime buster?
Best documentary I've ever seen!
I thought I knew a lot of interesting things about Nader compared to the average person, but man...this movie really told a lot. It also gave everyone's perspective on the man. From his closet friends and colleagues, to people that respect but disagree with him, and even people who can't stand his guts. I'm definitely going to make all my friends check out this film.
Fascinating Study of a Controversial Man
One of the best docs of 2006, An Unreasonable Man delves into the life and legacy of Ralph Nader. Chronicling his decades as a crusader of consumer rights up through his rise as a controversial political figure, the film tackles what may well become the defining moment of his legacy- the 2000 election. The doc gives voice to the entire spectrum of opinions about Ralph Nader, from those who revere him to those who despise him with every fiber of their being. An extremely engaging and entertaining film.
