Plot Summary

Ellen Barkin stars in this darkly comic story of the emotional rollercoaster of a family gathering. On the eve of her estranged son's (Michael Nardelli) wedding, Lynn (Barkin), a woman who has always worn her emotions on her sleeve, must deal with her long-simmering feud with her ex-husband (Thomas Haden Church) and his hot-tempered wife (Demi Moore), the disdain of her cold mother (Ellen Burstyn) and distant father (George Kennedy) and the ridicule of her ever-judgmental sisters. And the fact that she brings along her three deeply troubled children (Ezra Miller, Daniel Yelsky, Kate Bosworth) doesn't make things any easier for Lynn.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Both anguished and histrionic and in its strongest moments very, very good. But it is also overpopulated, strident and constitutionally unable to step back and scrutinize itself. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Nov 17, 2011

Rotten: Ellen Barkin - playing the estranged mother of the groom - does a big heap of acting as one of the more histrionic members of the clan. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 17, 2011

Fresh: For all of difficulties, there is an authenticity in Levinson's work that you can see in the film, and his is a compelling voice playing in that minor key. – Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times, Nov 17, 2011

Fresh: Laugh-laced dark drama of family angst overcomes the hurdle of its wedding-weekend setting. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Nov 11, 2011

A Train Wreck of a Movie

This is NOT a comedy. Sure, it had a few laughs, but only a very few.

There was not one character in this movie who was likeable. They were all a bunch of narcissistic, self centered, selfish individuals who never fully said what they meant. The director leaves so much up to our imaginations, and with such horrible characters it's easy to imagine the worst.

Watching this movie was like watching a train wreck. I wanted to see how the situations were resolved. They weren't and I want my time back.

Stunning. Brilliant. Beyond words.

This film has inspired me dramatically and is without question one of the most brilliant films ever made. Ellen Barkin and Ellen Burstyn deliver incredible, note-worthy performances here. Looking forward to the blu-ray release.

Hopefully this family will make yours look pretty good.

While it started a little slowly, I enjoyed this movie because of the realistic acting and writing. It's worth viewing just to watch Demi Moore flip out.
