Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A very satisfying and tonally precise English-language adaptation of an 1891 Chekhov novella. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Mary Bing's debut feature script sticks close to the novella, and director Kosashvili is always alive to the story's richness of character and situation. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: This excellent adaptation of Chekhov's little-known novella only whets the appetite for more. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Aug 2, 2010

Rotten: Little happens onscreen. The characters bicker, picnic, bathe, and borrow money: the usual small change of the Chekhovian deal. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Jun 24, 2010

Customer Reviews

very well done.

Excellent. Chekhov's tension is given space and atmosphere with gorgeous detail. This is every bit as well seen as felt.

The dual

I found myself in both characters, the intellectual and the passionate, or maybe I want to see it that way. good movie

Worth watching once

Slow. Unfocused. I liked the scenery. Seems like a very old take on boredom and relationships dulled by disinterest.
