Plot Summary
This is the definitive version of Francis Ford Coppola's stunning vision of the heart of darkness in all of us, re-edited and re-mastered with 49 minutes of additional footage. Nominated for eight Academy Awards®, this classic and compelling Vietnam War epic stars Martin Sheen as Army Captain Willard, a troubled man sent on a dangerous and mesmerizing odyssey into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade American colonel named Kurtz (Marlon Brando), who has succumbed to the horrors of war and barricaded himself in a remote outpost.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The film now seems both mellowed and -- thanks in part to the most vibrant-looking prints in its 22-year history -- revitalized.
Fresh: Still a great visceral kick.
Fresh: Coming back decades later to it, Coppola has been able to reshape these extraordinary scenes with a wisdom and humility perhaps missing before.
Fresh: The new Redux version isn't a better film, but for Coppola fans and film lovers, it's essential viewing.

Added depth to a movie that didn't need it...
Part of me wants to give Redux four stars, if only because the original Apocalypse Now wasn't broken. Far from it, actually. Apocalypse Now stands as one of the best movies ever made, regardless of what genre you label it and for so many reasons other than for "entertainment" alone. Redux will definitely add some depth to the story for those who have already experienced the original version, but might take away a bit of the tension for those who haven't. Some of the added/extended scenes are great, especially those involving the Playboy bunnies. When one of the bunnies asks Clean, "Who are you?" and he responds by saying, "I'm next, ma'am", it's absolutely hilarious despite the grim setting. Unfortunately, the scenes remove a great deal of the tension in Willard's methodical journey up the river, as stated earlier, if only because they, well... take time.
In short, the original Apocalypse Now was perfect (in my opinion) and Redux just adds some depth to it, although it's not necessary. Still gotta give it 5 stars though. It's Apocalypse Now, after all.
Apocalypse Now - Redux in HD
IMO, this is the best film of all time, period. I was a college student when this film premiered at a time when post-Vietnam War sentiment was extremely high and it caused me to completely change my mind about the war, and the duality in which we approached it. An entire generation has been defined/defined itself by the internal split that this film highlights through Martin Sheen's portrayal of Capt.Willard.
Horrible
Watch the original release if you want to see a great film. The editor did an excellent job of cutting the irrelevant material which makes this film disjointed. This version ruined the movie for me.
