Plot Summary
Musical stars Doris Day ("Pillow Talk") and Ray Bolger ("The Wizard of Oz") find love on land and sea, but not without some humorous complications in this lively classic. As a chorus girl mistakenly sent to Paris on a cultural junket, Day meets up with diplomat Bolger and the dance of romance begins.

I love it!
Most people (including diehard Doris Day fans) cannot stand this movie, but I happen to like it. I think it's charming. There's some special quality about it, I guess it's all the big production numbers, that just makes it fun to watch. The best song is "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight," and I love the dance numbers. Doris is fantastic and Ray Bolger is a great dancer! There is no obvious chemistry between them, but it is still a really cute movie. Just try it! :)
Why Is There No Love For April In Paris?
I love pretty much all of Doris Day's films and this is no exception. I will fully admit that this movie's effects are cheesy even for 1952. I also think it could have been just a tad bit longer (although I know there were tensions between Ray Bolger and the director that may have complicated that from happening). However, I don't get the criticism by so many that this movie has no sparkle. Is it the fact that Ray Bolger was no Rock Hudson and so not worthy of someone as gorgeous as Doris Day? I admit the first time I saw it and saw Ray Bolger come on the screen, I was thinking there's no way those two can hook up (even though I had a crush on the Scarecrow as a girl!) However, there was one moment that truly got me: when Ethel comes out from behind her changing screen and nearly runs into the awkward Sam, why my heart skipped a beat. So much for no chemistry! So it's not sizzling chemistry by any means, but it's a cute, feel good chemistry that leaves a smile on my face if not so much my heart melting into goo. As for the songs in this movie, they range from just okay to spectacular. I could have easily done without the "Give Me Your Lips" bit and Ray should have had a few more moments too (again it goes back to my complaint that like other musicals of the time, this one should have been longer), but Doris was amazing as usual, even in the very subdued title number. So, while this movie is not perfect when compared to some of the other classics of the time, I personally love it and wish more movies like this were made today. Then again, maybe it's just because I secretly enjoy the fact that the Scarecrow got someone as awesome as Doris Day.
