Plot Summary

Womanizing local weatherman Steve (Owen Wilson) must accompany his off-the-grid best friend Ben (Zach Galifianakis) to his childhood home for Ben's estranged father's funeral. They soon discover that Ben has inherited the family fortune, leaving the ill-equipped duo to battle Ben's formidable sister (Amy Poehler) and deal with his father's gorgeous 25-year-old widow (Laura Ramsey). Written and directed by Matthew Weiner (“Mad Men”) and featuring complex performances from iconic comedic actors Wilson, Galifianakis and Poehler, Are You Here is an unexpected story about family, friendship and the people who keep us afloat when life throws us for a loop.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: [An] endearing muddle, which flails in search of an identity. – Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times, Aug 21, 2014

Rotten: In Mad Men mastermind Matthew Weiner's big-screen directorial debut, the aggressively unfunny Are You Here, all of the dark humor and delicate character shadings we're used to seeing on his TV series are conspicuously absent. – Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly, Aug 13, 2014

Rotten: It's so formless, awkward and jarringly directed it's almost unwatchable. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Aug 21, 2014

Rotten: This sorry misfire will provide enjoyment only for rival television creatives invidiously rooting for Matthew Weiner to stumble. – David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter, Sep 9, 2013

Customer Reviews

WOW I AM SHOCKED at the negative reviews!!

I laughed through out this whole film, I thought it was extremely funny, not in a cheap ridiculous way, but in a clever and intelligent way- much like the humor in “the Office” I gave this movie 5 stars because I was entertained through out the whole film, I thought the characters where interesting, the story was great and the acting was great!

Very pleasurable

I enjoyed this movie thoroughly.

Very On Time Movie!

Owen Wilson does his thing—awkward, charming, honest, self-absorbed so very well and it plays off Zach G and Amy with excellent timing. Great love story about self, romantic, friend, and family relationships. The ending is classic style for Weiner. The statement about modernization is outstanding! Zach does an awesome job of portraying the gamut of human emotions. Must see for all but many things to appreciate for Boomers.
