Plot Summary

Attack is based on the play by Norman Brooks, The Fragile Fox. This searing war film is a powerful indictment against a military system which protects even its most incompetent of officers. Eddie Albert plays a posturing but hopelessly inept infantry captain, whose misdeeds are taken to heart by his officers. Jack Palance has promised to kill Albert if he makes another strategic mistake. Albert does just that when he leads Palance's troop into a bad situation in which Albert will never regret.

ATTACK!

Jack Palance's finest performance, and one of his first defining roles as a character actor. This is the best WWII movie ever produced in Hollywood. The plot is simple, the acting by Palance & Lee Marvin are superb. Eddie Albert is, as always, a bit shmaltzy, but the rest of the flick is so good, he is forgiven. Typical of the date of production, there is not one single black actor in the flick. But the platoon consists of the typical WWII war movie ethnic mix profile of America's melting pot...the Italian, the Jew, the Southerner, and the WASP West Point officers, all working together to fight Hitler. Great, great film.
