Plot Summary
When beautiful kitchen maid Augustine (French recording artist Soko) suffers an inexplicable, violent seizure, she is sent to a psychiatric hospital specializing in the treatment of feminine "hysteria" and presided over by Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot (a founding father of modern neurology and a mentor to Sigmund Freud). Fascinated by his new patient, Charcot (Vincent Lindon) quickly makes Augustine the star attraction in a series of hysteria presentations, hypnotizing her to induce spectacular fits for crowded lecture halls. As the full nature of Augustine's affliction begins to emerge, the relationship between doctor and patient becomes more complicated and personal power dynamics start to shift. Based on a true story from late 19th century Paris, AUGUSTINE is a lush, darkly sensuous tale of romance, psychology, and sexual politics.

Fresh: Ms. Winocour is not inclined to turn "Augustine" into a neatly moralized fable of a predator and his victim. Rather, the film is what might be called a melodrama of transference ...
Fresh: The film is something of a paradox, simultaneously passionate and dispassionate, its ending tethered to both bruised triumph and a sense of things falling apart.
Fresh: Visually, the film conjures the past with shadowy interiors and harsh light. Winocour, who also scripted, often makes her points without words.
Rotten: Vague conjurings of mood take the place of insight, sentiment takes the place of complexity, and a clumsy and superficial attention to the rigid script keeps the movie from coming to life.

terrible
there is definitely suspense in this movie. the tension between the doctor and the young woman is what draws you in and makes you continue to watch. The movie was slow, and drawn out and the ending? i don't know what to say about it. i am very confused. i mean through out the entire movie the young woman has this strange affliction one minute on the right side of her body and the next on the left.. then she falls down some stairs.. BOOM! cured. I'm not sure if her performance at the lecture was real or she just acted so the doctor wouldn't look like a fool.. and the entire sexual scene at the very end? i don't understand that. the ending ruined the entire movie for me. was her affliction real? was she faking the entire time? if not, what was it that ailed her and how was she mysteriously cured just by falling down some steps? and what is the awkward relationship between the doctor and his wife about? very strange and unsatisfying movie… i am so glad i rented this and didn't by it. I'm very tempted to give it one star but ill just leave it with two
Loved This Movie!
I saw this movie last year at the Toronto International Film Festival and it was by far a stand out amonst many of the other films that premiered. This movie has some very surprising twists that you dont see coming and as a result, it makes what you think is predictable to become the unexpected. If you are a fan of GOOD drama, then thhis is a must see film
