Plot Summary

From the director of Cinema Paradiso comes a stirring, unforgettable new epic of Italian life as you’ve never seen it before. The course of a lifetime reflects the evolution of a country as young Peppino takes work as a shepherd to support his family in the Sicilian town of Bagheria, nicknamed “Baarìa” by its residents. During the next five decades he experiences the passionate love of his life, undergoes a powerful political awakening, and discovers a destiny he could have never imagined. A visual feast featuring a powerful score by legendary Academy Award®-winning composer Ennio Morricone, BAARIA captures the past century with a mesmerizing beauty and rare cinematic power.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: I'm all for bloated, confusing, directorial vanity projects like Synecdoche New York and 8 1/2. But Synecdoche New York and 8 1/2 this ain't. – Simon Miraudo, Quickflix, Apr 4, 2011

Fresh: The picture does have its plodding moments - but there's enough left over for the rest of us to have a reasonably good time. – John Hartl, Seattle Times, Jan 27, 2011

Rotten: It's a colossal Stella Artois ad. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Jul 22, 2010

Fresh: Although at times it feels a little too packed, taking a closer look into fascist times, war and the notorious Italian mafia through the eyes of every day people is refreshing. – Ian Freer, Empire Magazine, Jul 22, 2010

Wonderful movie

This movie requires a lot of patience and a very open mind...! I'm surprised by the Rotten Tomatos rating and the ratings of the critics, people who obviously didn't watch the movie or understand the point of it. This is a wonderful movie, and anyone interested in Italy and Italian culture will benefit from it. And if you ever get a chance to go to Sicily, go and visit Bagheria! It's an interesting place that is brought to life by this extraordinary movie.

Film making at its very best! Make sure you don't miss this fine film, you will love it.

I have no word to describe such lovely fil. You will travel into the heart, soul and mind of Italy.
