Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: This likable trash occasionally outsmarts more moneyed Hollywood fish features.
Rotten: Rendall and screenwriters Russell Mulcahy and John Kim forget that in between bursts of tart, blood-drenched mayhem, there's a saggy, dumb chamber drama that's completely bland and under-seasoned.
Rotten: [It] has many flaws, the foremost among these is the inability to indicate whether we're supposed to consider the savage behavior brought on by its crises as ambiguous or unassailably good.
Fresh: It is all very silly, and more Corman than Spielberg, but entertaining.

Great Film with Good Animation
Bait is a film in which, a year after a great white takes the life of the main character's friend, a tsunami floods the character's city, trapping the main character and others in a grocery store. As if this weren't bad enough, the tsunami has flooded two great white sharks into separate locations in the store. Now the groups must battle the sharks in a race against time as the rooms slowly fill with water. First thing I want to get out of the way is that, although there have been many complaints about the film's animation, it really isn't that bad. In fact, most of the film's animation is incredibly lifelike, especially during the intense tsunami scene. Even during the attack scenes when the animation can stand out a little bit more, it still impresses and never deducts from the experience, looking to be the visual equal of the wildly popular Piranha 3D. The film's story is easily when of the best in the horror genre, with each person having a unique and interesting back story that develops as the film progresses. Also noteworthy is the films realism. This film knows why sharks attack, and it incorporates effortlessly in the film. For example, the groups often use blood and splashing to distract the sharks as it is what they use to locate injured or distressed prey. It also uses facts to back up why the sharks are doing what they are doing. While some might be concerned by the fact that the majority of the film takes place in a grocery store, they need not worry. The film switches between the store itself and the parking garage at the appropriate times to keep the viewer actively engaged in the film and to avoid fatigue. Overall, this is a great film that is a must see for any horror fan. This film has earned a spot next to Jaws on the few great shark films. I'm giving Bait a 9 out of 10.
