Plot Summary

In November of 1999, Seattle broke into a full-scale state of emergency as thousands of peaceful protestors gathered in resistance to the World Trade Organization. The city’s mayor, a SWAT cop on the streets and his pregnant wife, and four demonstrators are caught in the crossfire as their lives intersect in the ensuing riots. Stuart Townsend, in his debut writing and directing role, seamlessly merges actual footage of the devastating chaos with brilliant performances.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: But a drama is only as convincing as its characters. The people awkwardly forced together in Battle in Seattle are rhetorical mouthpieces tied to the sketchy plotlines of a so-so Hollywood ensemble movie. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Sep 22, 2008

Fresh: It sounds like a bad TV movie, yet Stuart Townsend, the veteran actor-turned-director re-creates it all with stunning passion and skill in Battle in Seattle. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: It's easy to see why Townsend was attracted to this inherently dramatic situation, but the characters he's put on screen feel less like real people than like entities created to either make plot points or stand in for specific positions. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Oct 18, 2008

Fresh: The result is not quite a documentary and not quite a drama, but interesting all the same. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Better Than I Thought

I was set to be disappointed because of the knuckleheads that wrote previous reviews, but I was surprised how good it was. It got the tension of the demonstration, building toward the violence. It's obvious the police were outnumbered and panicked, bringing the violence to the fore, simeltaniously with the Black Bloc's assault on the commercial areas. What amazed me most was the planning that went into peaceful portion of the demonstration, bringing some very real problems to the light. Well worth watching.

Dramatized but overall accurate

Yes, there are things added to this to make it more dramatic. However, overall, this is a very accurate representation of the events surrounding this story. Our 1st Amendment rights are being challenged every single day, so it's important that information such as this is seen by as many as possible. Make up your own mind about whether the added drama takes anything away from it. Don't listen to some of the reviewers who are too busy watching MTV to understand the importance of this. If this movie doesn't make you angry, or at least curious, you are still asleep.

The reality

This movie basically tells exactly what happened. i was there for the mobilization, many friends of mine who are completely peaceful were beat, gased and arrested. I even saw an elderly woman of seattle get beat! Believe what you want but this is the truth from someone in the streets. The policies of the WTO rape and kill people and the earth.
