Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: [It] has a plot as unambitious as a macaroni dinner, familiar and easy to eat and not particularly nutritious.
Rotten: Battleship is all noise and crashing metal, sinking to the shallows of Michael Bay's Armageddon and then digging to the brain-extinction level of the Transformers trilogy.
Rotten: Mostly, Battleship is a noisy, overlong and numbing military-vs.-aliens saga with laughably bad dialogue.
Rotten: Something of an earnest, two-hour infomercial that should do wonders for naval recruiting if not civilian entertainment.

EXACTLY WHAT YOU'D EXPECT IT TO BE
I'm not gonna lie. "Battleship" is a loud, overblown, uninspired blockbuster full of generic characters, endless action clichés, and some of the worst dialogue ever written. But then again, did anyone really expect anything better from a big-budget sci-fi movie based on a family board game? The premise is basically your classic alien invasion story with less imagination and more explosions. A fleet of Navy ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals. Yes, the plot has been done to death before, and it doesn't help that the writing is absolutely terrible, but once you take all those narrative problems out of the picture, it's really not that bad. In fact, it can be pretty entertaining most of the time. The special effects are well-crafted and surprisingly realistic, despite the fact that they take up almost the entire focus of the film. Even the aliens themselves are impressively designed, as are their spaceships and war machines. Visuals aside though, there's really not much else to praise about the film. The acting is simply mediocre. Unlike his lead turn in "John Carter", Taylor Kitsch is a huge disappointment as the main character. He gives no effort to deliver a convincing performance and just ends up phoning it in the whole time. As for the other actors, Liam Neeson's supporting role is unfortunately wasted (although he does give it his best effort), Brooklyn Decker is forgettable, but attractive as the love interest for Kitsch, and Rihanna manages to impress in her acting debut as a solid, believable character. So yeah, I think it's generally safe to say that "Battleship" is the marine version of "Transformers", with awkward comedic moments and product placements galore. Sure, it's completely predictable and ridiculous, but the battle sequences and CGI effects are still a ton of fun to watch. In the end, I'd only recommend watching it if you prefer flashy, stimulating imagery over quality storytelling. Personally, I thought it was okay. Will I remember this movie a year from now? Probably not. But at least it kept me entertained.
WHAT A RIDE!
Going into Battleship i did NOT expect much. Boy was I wrong. This is a hard core action film with great actors, amazing graphics, and a nice story. Im really into the transformers films so I thought i would give this a try. This is pretty much transformers on water. Full of destruction and mayhem. I thought the cast did an awesome job. Taylor Kitsch didn't do too bad. His character was a little annoying in the beginning but he picked up the speed. Brooklyn decker just another hot girl in the movie. Rihanna. I was very surprised with her role. She did a fantastic job doing the character raikes a tough chick with no love bone in her body. Liam neeson. Big fan but he wasn't in it too much. He did a nice job as always. Very intimidating and serious. Overall this movie is a blast! A nice popcorn muncher. Kept me very entertained.
Great movie
After reading the reviews on how big of a flop it was I was reluctant to see it. Man was I wrong about a movie it was a good mix of action and comedy. When a bunch of old sailors help and save the day now that is funny stuff. I would recommend this movie to anyone I actually want to see it again.
