Plot Summary

A powerfully moving, personal exploration of a grief for the father she never knew, this award-winning film chronicles Tracy Droz Tragos' heart-wrenching quest to understand and cope with a loss shared by the estimated 20,000 Americans whose fathers were killed in Vietnam. Weaving emotionally compelling interviews with home movies, stock footage, and family photos, Tragos travels from Selma, Alabama, to the U.S. Senate in search of her father’s Naval Academy roommates and war buddies, each of whom has been silently mourning his death and remembers her father’s life in his own way. Along her journey, Tragos uncovers a 30-year-old mystery, as she comes to know her father as a man, untangled from the memory of a war that wounded a nation. And while some discoveries are almost too difficult to bear, it is ultimately the truth that allows her, and her entire family, to understand and move forward.

Customer Reviews

A compelling film.

Droz produces and directs and important film. A film that helps us to understand the depths of loss, long term loss, to individual children and families when a soldier is killed. The editor, jenna Feely, deserves a standing ovation. In a documentary film, the skill of an editor is paramount. Feely saw the story and provided the intelligence to move this film past the temptation for the maudlin. The family and friends of Dan Droz provide a courageous honesty about the loss each has experienced. In some ways, this is a small film. It is exactly because of that, that the film is able to succeed beyond the political. This is a must see film.

A 5 Hankie Movie

Wonderfully put together. A moving tribute to the futility of the Vietnam War, this picture combines a loving story of a war orphan's quest to get closer to her father with a historical analysis of the difficulties surrounding war in general, and the Vietnam War in particular. Part family drama, part biographical love story, this film captivates from beginning to end. Well worth renting - just have your kleenex nearby. Thank you Tracy for sharing your story with us. I hope that in the making you were able to come to peace with your situation. I know your dad would be very, very proud of you.

Very Moving

This is a very powerful and moving documentary. A truly amazing project! It's incredible the way Tracey used still photos and footage of her Vietnam War veteran father's life and death. You can certainly see why it is such a struggle for family members to move forward after such a tragedy occurs.
