Plot Summary

Once-promising writer Morgan Midwood works at his father's furniture store to save up enough money to buy an engagement ring for his high school sweetheart and presumed saving grace. However, when he discovers she's been making a cuckold of him, he enters a tailspin—getting arrested, evicted, and fired in short order—and seems content to move home with his parents and embrace a life of anonymity and failed promise. At the same time, Morgan's carefree, underachieving best friend, Nick—who has arguably caused, or at least exacerbated, many of Morgan's problems—finally decides to take some stock in his own life, championing a revolutionary piece of furnishing for sale in Morgan's father's store. Over the course of a Long Island summer full of love, laughs, heartbreak, and self-discovery, these two friends ride a violent and hilarious wave teeming with women, family, cops, and cons, hoping not to get swallowed under.

A beautiful film.

BEACH PILLOWS is a touching and nuanced indie film about friendship and potential and acceptance with strong performances by both leads. Kartheiser especially seems to relish his role as the frenetic Nick.

A most promising debut.

charm and depth beneath the comedy

At the beginning the movie reminded me a bit of The Brothers McMullen--young men still not fully in the adult world in Long Island--funnily and winsomely so. The writing is interesting--clever wording and the situations are not contrived or predictable. Both of the main actors give nuanced performances, and the filming advanced the story without being intrusive. In the end, a charming and heartening story…really enjoyed it.

A comedy with something to say

I usually don't like comedies these days because they are typically extremely shallow, full of slapstick humor, schadenfreude, flat characters fitting a small set of tropes, refining and perfecting the same jokes. This movie took me back to the "good ol' days" where a movie could be funny without it being solely about the jokes. The plot is there to serve a narrative purpose, not just to provide structure for a series of comedic events.

To me, this movie seems like the highlight reel of the lives of two fairly normal American young men. It covers the hliarious escapades they have and also their experience of the central challenge of millenials after finishing education: now that no one is feeding you a list of things you are supposed to do (or rebel against) in life, you have to decide what matters and how to pursue it, and in school no one taught you how to answer those questions.

This movie didn't blow me away like a masterpiece of Tarantino or Sergio Leone. But I think it was successful as a piece of art in that it took a problem that I identify with, that I see in my life and my friends' lives, and showed it to me from a new perspective. This movie has something to say, and I heard it. And I had fun at the same time.
