Plot Summary

When twinkie newbie and closet bear-chaser Tyler (Joe Conti) finally infiltrates New York's exclusive "bear" scene it doesn't take long for him to become infatuated with commitment-phobic Roger, the bonafide Casanova. As Tyler negotiates the trials and tribulations of his seemingly elusive love, he finds himself drawn closer to the quirky and endearing characters populating the fabulous big bear community. Touching on society's pressure to fit into a mold, the struggles of long-term relationships and the rediscovery of the importance of true friendship, BearCity is a prime cut of movie-beef that will have you laughing to the final frame.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Of the crop of gay-centered features from TLA Releasing...the romantic dramedy BearCity certainly shows the most complexity. – Andy Webster, New York Times, Oct 22, 2010

Fresh: Eventually buckles under the weight of affable but unfunny camp. – Aaron Hillis, Village Voice, Oct 21, 2010

Rotten: Douglas Langway's middling comedy is sort of a Sex and the City for big, hirsute gay guys and the younger cubs who fancy them... – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Oct 22, 2010

Rotten: Director Douglas Langway is aware that while bear-ness could be seen as a response to a culture obsessed with gender-conformant and hairless young bodies, it can also be a rather unoriginal one. – Diego Costa, Slant Magazine, Oct 24, 2010

Coming Out Twice

I so understand this movie, when he says saying you like bears and chubs is like coming out for a second time. I use to get teased for liking big guys. I actually had someone say that something was wrong with me for being attracted to big men. I am so glad to see movies like this. It really does make a difference in so many ways.

Very sweet!

I've seen a lot of gay indies, and they're usually horrible. This movie, was genuinely sweet and funny, with a very appealing cast.

3 woofs up

Fantastic movie good to show how the labels that caused the Bears to migrate to there own community are now in our community and how attitude and non-acceptence still exist. Great Job Folks and thank you....
