Plot Summary
Set in exotic southern India in the late 1930s, this provocative tale traces the story of three people caught in an inexorable web of forbidden romance and dangerous secrets. After a British spice planter (Linus Roache) falls in love with his alluring servant (Nandita Das), an idealistic young man (Rahul Bose) finds himself torn between his ambitions and his family, his village and his past. Loyalties are tested and destinies decided as two worlds collide in this powerful and unforgettable drama.

Rotten: Unfortunately, the parade of consequences brought on by the affair has little emotional substance.
Rotten: It's definitely good, definitely a little bit boring.
Fresh: India has rarely looked so beautiful onscreen. Against the anguish of his human characters, director Santosh Sivan juxtaposes a tranquil, green world in the hills of the southwestern state of Keralain 1937, 10 years before independence.
Fresh: Acting honours go to Bose, his face an eloquently shifting register of shame, calculation and sympathy.

Amazing film. Cimematography is exceptional. An unforgetable film.
Simple and wonderful
Just loved this film, it's to the point and anyone can understand the message...
Has all the elements to make a great movie...but somehow misses the mark.
If your expectations are of a story where "love conquers all" this is not the movie for you. The scenery is fabulous, the reality of the people in the movie is incredible but the movie is a downer. Unless you are thrilled by one poor Indian shaking off the yoke of British Imperialism and becoming an outcast the movie leaves you unfulfilled. I found it deeply disappointing, especially since I rented it as part of an intimate Valentine's day.
